Kneecap said its Gaza-related messages did not appear on screens during its April 11, 2025, Coachella set. The official livestream also cut out shortly after a crowd chanted about Margaret Thatcher, according to contemporaneous reports. Those events prompted questions about whether the band was cut off—but the available reporting does not establish that the political message caused the interruption or document an official explanation for it.
What happened during Kneecap’s Coachella set?
Kneecap performed on Friday, April 11, 2025, during the first weekend of Coachella. In the set, a member referred to former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, followed by the crowd chanting “Maggie’s in a box.” Contemporary coverage reported that the official livestream cut out shortly afterward. Billboard Canada and TheJournal.ie covered the sequence.
Afterward, Kneecap said its Gaza messaging had also been missing from the on-screen presentation. The band posted: “Not the only thing that was cut – our messaging on the US-backed genocide in Gaza somehow never appeared on screens either.” It added: “Back next Friday Coachella and it’ll be sorted.” Those are the band’s claims; they do not independently establish why the stream interrupted or what happened behind the scenes with the screens.
Was Kneecap cut off, and was its pro-Palestine message removed?
There are two separate claims to distinguish: the livestream interruption, which viewers could observe, and the band’s allegation that its projected Gaza messaging never appeared. Reporting places the stream cut shortly after the chant, but does not verify that the interruption was a decision to censor Kneecap or that it was caused by the chant or political content.

Nor does the available account support saying that every Palestine-related remark or image was removed. SFGATE reported that an earlier spoken “F—k it, free Palestine,” made after a song, remained in the livestream, and that at least one viewer waved a Palestinian flag. Kneecap’s complaint specifically concerned messaging that did not appear on screens.
Is there an official explanation for the livestream cut?
The contemporaneous reports cited here establish the timing of the interruption and reproduce Kneecap’s account of the missing screen messaging; they do not establish a reason for the cut. TheJournal.ie reported that Coachella and the band’s management were approached for comment. No explanation from Coachella for the interruption is documented in the reviewed coverage.

Kneecap returned for the festival’s second weekend and again made pro-Palestinian statements. In a later report, Dazed said organizer Goldenvoice described itself as “blindsided” by the statements. That later response does not explain the first-weekend livestream interruption.

Coachella’s official livestream page identifies YouTube as the platform and lists coverage of seven stages over April 10–12 and April 17–19, 2025. That provides context for the broadcast, but is not evidence about editorial decisions during Kneecap’s set.
