Trained by her mother, vocalist Mogubai Kurdikar, she became a leading Hindustani classical singer whose khayal, devotional music and emotionally charged interpretations reached beyond any single gharana.
Who was Kishori Amonkar?
Amonkar was a leading Hindustani classical vocalist, especially associated with khayal and devotional song. The Sangeet Natak Akademi biography gives her birthplace as Mumbai and says she trained under her mother, Mogubai Kurdikar. Biographical accounts differ on Amonkar’s birth year: the Akademi gives 1931, while The Guardian’s 2017 obituary gives 10 April 1932 and records her death on 3 April 2017, aged 84. The discrepancy is unresolved.

Her honours included the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1985, the Padma Bhushan in 1987, the Padma Vibhushan in 2002 and election as an Akademi Fellow in 2009, according to the Akademi profile.
How Mogubai Kurdikar shaped her music
Mogubai Kurdikar was Amonkar’s principal guru as well as her mother. An eminent disciple of Ustad Alladiya Khan, Mogubai passed on the Jaipur gharana’s demanding training and musical nuances. That inheritance gave Amonkar a grounding in the tradition’s discipline; it did not require her to perform as a replica of her teacher.

The Foundation’s account of her legacy describes Amonkar as absorbing the gharana’s principles and then exploring beyond its boundaries to develop a distinctive style. Her story is therefore not a break with tradition so much as a transformation of it: knowledge of the grammar made individual interpretation possible.
What made her singing distinctive?
Structure, then discovery
Jaipur-Atrauli khayal is often discussed in relation to the bandish, the composed song that anchors a raga performance. Musician and writer Arnab Chakrabarty describes the approach as composition-centered: the bandish is introduced early, and the singer develops the raga through melodic ideas it contains. In his account, Amonkar’s mature performances unfold patiently, focusing on particular notes, building phrases around them and returning to the sthayi—the main, recurring section of the composition—as the raga takes shape.

That is a useful way to listen, not a universal formula for every Jaipur performance. Chakrabarty contrasts Amonkar’s earlier recordings, which can outline a raga more broadly, with the slower, more gradual focal-note development of her later approach. Listen across recordings for changes in pacing, the weight given to the bandish, and the balance between formal design and expansive improvisation. Chakrabarty’s account offers a detailed discussion of that evolution.
Grammar without confinement
Amonkar spoke of the tension between lineage and artistic freedom. Akashvani News reproduces this statement attributed to her: “There is nothing called a gharana. There is only music. It has been bound in these gharanas and that is like dividing music into specific castes. One should not teach the students the limits of this art. There are none. But one has to understand the grammar. Which is why, one is taught the alankaar, the ragas.” The Akashvani News page does not identify the original interview date.
Her position clarifies what inheritance meant in her art: learn the discipline closely, but do not mistake its boundaries for music’s limits. The Guardian describes her as a leading Jaipur gharana exponent whose individual approach reflected other gharanas too. Her performances brought intellectual control together with emotional intensity, while devotion was central to how she understood music. The Guardian also quotes her calling music “a dialogue with the divine.”

Recordings provide different ways into Amonkar’s work. The Guardian names Live in London (1998) and Sampradaya: Carrying Forward a Tradition (2003) among her releases. Rather than treating either as a definitive introduction, listeners can use them to hear how she balances the composed framework, gradual raga development and expressive intensity.

Her career also extended into film music without being defined by it. She sang the title song for Geet Gaaya Pattharon Ne (1964) and composed music for Drishti (1990), according to the Guardian. The Akademi profile records that she wrote Swarartha Ramani, a Marathi book about Indian classical music.
How her musical legacy continues
Amonkar’s granddaughter and disciple Tejashree Amonkar is also a Jaipur-Atrauli vocalist. Her official website describes the Gāyana Saraswati Kishori Amonkar Foundation’s aims: preserving recordings, manuscripts, compositions and writings, and supporting an archive and research centre, alongside concerts, lectures and publications. These are stated preservation goals, not evidence that every planned facility is already operating.

That work points to the many forms a musical inheritance can take: training passed between generations, recordings that let listeners return to a performance, and efforts to preserve the materials through which future musicians and researchers can study an artist’s work.
