‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ opened to $58,400,788 at the domestic box office over May 10–12, 2024, ranking No. 1 in 4,075 theaters. That is the opening-weekend figure listed by Box Office Mojo and The Numbers. The film’s first public numbers, however, were estimates released during the weekend, and they do not all match that final listing. Knowing which figure is which, and what geography it covers, is the key to citing the debut correctly.
The opening figures at a glance
Four different opening-period numbers circulated in May 2024. They come from different sources, measure different geographies, and carry different levels of certainty.
| Figure | Amount | Geography | Status | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic opening weekend (May 10–12, 2024) | $58,400,788 | Domestic (U.S.) | Later-listed database figure; ranked No. 1 in 4,075 theaters | Box Office Mojo and The Numbers, current listings checked in 2026 |
| Studio debut estimate | $58.5 million | Domestic | Estimate announced on Sunday, May 12, 2024 | The Walt Disney Company, May 12, 2024 |
| North American Sunday estimate | $56.5 million | U.S. and Canada | Sunday estimate; AP noted final domestic figures would follow on Monday | The Associated Press, May 12, 2024, citing Comscore |
| Worldwide debut | $131.2 million | Worldwide | Studio estimate for the debut period, not a running total | The Walt Disney Company, May 12, 2024 |
Why the Sunday estimates and the final listing differ
Studios and trade reporters publish weekend figures before final tallies are complete. The sequence for this release went as follows.
Sunday, May 12, 2024: two estimates in circulation
Disney announced that the film had opened No. 1 domestically, with an estimated $58.5 million in domestic receipts and $131.2 million worldwide for the debut. The same day, The Associated Press reported a $56.5 million Sunday estimate for U.S. and Canadian theaters, attributed to Comscore, and said final domestic figures would be released Monday. The two estimates were published by different parties and cover different geographic scopes, so they should not be treated as a single correction chain.

Later database listings: $58,400,788
Box Office Mojo and The Numbers list the May 10–12 weekend at $58,400,788, with the film at No. 1 and playing in 4,075 theaters. Both pages are databases that can be updated, so the figure reflects the listing as checked in 2026. The sources reviewed do not explain how the $56.5 million and $58.5 million Sunday estimates were reconciled with the final listing, and neither the studio announcement nor AP’s report describes a method. Readers should not assume a specific adjustment process.
How to cite the opening number correctly
- Use “$58,400,788 domestic opening weekend (May 10–12, 2024)” when citing the database listing. It is the only figure in this set that is a final, listed domestic weekend total.
- Use “$58.5 million estimated domestic opening” when quoting Disney’s May 12, 2024 announcement, and keep the word “estimated.”
- Use “$56.5 million North American Sunday estimate” for AP’s figure. Calling it “domestic” misstates its geography, because it includes Canada.
- Do not present the $131.2 million worldwide debut as a total. It is a debut-period figure.
- Describe every figure as gross box-office receipts. Gross is not studio profit or net revenue, and none of these numbers shows what the studio kept.
Disney’s ranking claim
Disney’s May 12 announcement said the estimated $58.5 million domestic opening was the second-biggest domestic opening in the Apes series and the biggest opening of director Wes Ball’s career. These comparisons are the studio’s own, and they are attributed here to Disney rather than independently recalculated against each earlier film’s final figures.

As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
Disney also quoted Tony Chambers, the studio’s executive vice president of theatrical distribution: “It is a great result – a testament to the quality of the movie, the love and affinity for the franchise and it is a great way to kick-start the summer box office.” That is attributed opinion from the studio, not an independent measure of audience response.
Domestic and worldwide totals after the opening
The box-office databases list a domestic total of $171,130,165 and a worldwide total of $397,378,150. These are cumulative figures, not debut figures, and they are listed as of the 2026 checks described above. Compared with the $58,400,788 opening weekend, the domestic total is roughly 2.9 times larger, which is simple arithmetic on the listed figures rather than a separately reported ratio.

The Associated Press quoted Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior media analyst: “This franchise has never been allowed to lose its momentum.” He also said: “There are very few franchises that have this kind of longevity.” These are expert opinions about the franchise’s performance. They do not measure audience reception, and they do not establish why the film earned what it did.
