King Charles and Queen Camilla led the Royal Family at major VE Day 80 commemorations on 5 May 2025, three days after Prince Harry’s BBC interview about family reconciliation and his UK security dispute. The sequence is clear; the available reporting does not show that the royal appearance was planned as a response to Harry.
What happened at the VE Day 80 events?
The Royal Household described 8 May 2025 as the 80th anniversary of VE Day, marking the end of the Second World War in Europe. The principal royal events began earlier, on 5 May: King Charles and Queen Camilla, other members of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister and Second World War veterans watched a military procession travel down The Mall. Members of the family appeared on Buckingham Palace’s balcony, echoing the 1945 appearance by King George VI and his family. The King and Queen also hosted a tea party for veterans and members of the wartime generation. (The Royal Household’s VE Day 80 programme and recap, 1 May 2025.)
The commemorations continued on 8 May with a service at Westminster Abbey and a concert on Horse Guards Parade. King Charles gave a speech at 9 p.m., the time King George VI had addressed the nation in 1945. In it, the King said: “In remembering the past, we must also look to the future. As the number of those who lived through the Second World War so sadly dwindles, the more it becomes our duty to carry their stories forward, to ensure their experiences are never to be forgotten. We must listen, learn and share.” (The Royal Household.)
What did Prince Harry say before VE Day?
Harry’s BBC interview aired on 2 May 2025, after the Court of Appeal rejected his appeal over UK security arrangements. He said he wanted to reconcile with his family: “I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore,” the Associated Press reported. He also connected the dispute with his father not speaking to him. Those remarks describe Harry’s account; they do not independently establish the King’s reasons or intentions. What the court decided
According to AP, three Court of Appeal judges ruled unanimously against Harry’s bid to restore regular publicly funded police protection in the UK. They upheld the earlier decision that the bespoke security plan was not unlawful, irrational or unjustified. Harry alleged that Palace officials had directed the security decision and that it endangered his family. Those are his allegations, not findings by the court. AP reported the Palace’s response that the matter had been examined repeatedly by the courts, “with the same conclusion reached on each occasion.” (Associated Press.)
Did King Charles respond to Harry at the VE Day event?
The main royal procession and balcony appearance followed Harry’s interview, but that timing alone does not establish a response. Before the events, a Palace aide told Sky News that the King, Queen and other royals were looking forward to the week’s VE Day events. The aide described their purpose as celebrating, commemorating and giving thanks to the wartime generation; Sky reported that the family hoped nothing would “detract or distract” from the commemorations. This documents the Palace’s stated focus, not a change to the event plan or a deliberate rebuttal to Harry. (Sky News, 4 May 2025.)
