King Charles III unveiled Jonathan Yeo’s portrait on 14 May 2024, with the Royal Family announcing it the following day as the first official portrait completed since the Coronation. PerthNow’s report highlighted sharply critical reactions to its red-and-pink palette and style, while also quoting praise. Those selected comments show a range of responses; they do not establish what the public as a whole thought.
Why Jonathan Yeo painted King Charles
The Drapers’ Company commissioned the portrait in 2020 to mark Charles’s 50 years as a member, a milestone reached in 2022. By the time the painting was unveiled, Charles had become King. Yeo described that change in the subject’s public role as part of the portrait’s evolution, comparing it to a butterfly painted hovering over Charles’s shoulder.
The Royal Family reported that Charles and Queen Camilla attended the unveiling, where the King revealed the work alongside Yeo. The Royal Family’s account calls it the first official portrait completed since the Coronation. The official announcement also quotes Yeo describing the opportunity to portray an “extraordinary and unique person” at the historic moment of becoming King.
What the portrait depicts
Charles is shown wearing the uniform of the Welsh Guards, whose Regimental Colonel he became in 1975. Yeo held four sittings with him: the first at Highgrove in June 2021, later ones at Clarence House, and the final sitting in November 2023. Yeo also drew on his own drawings and photographs.

Do the comments prove what the portrait means or what the public thinks?
No. The colonialism question and the other remarks are commenters’ interpretations, not evidence of Yeo’s intent or an established meaning of the painting. The official unveiling account describes the commission, the subject’s uniform and Yeo’s process; it does not substantiate those interpretations.

PerthNow characterized the feedback it described as “overwhelmingly negative,” but neither its report nor the Royal Family’s announcement supplies a representative sample, a platform-wide measurement or a polling method. The comments demonstrate that some viewers objected to the palette, style or finish and that at least one praised the work. They cannot establish how audiences overall responded.
