Prime Reading is included with Amazon Prime; Kindle Unlimited is a separate subscription. Prime Reading offers a smaller, rotating selection of eligible Kindle books and other content. Kindle Unlimited has a much larger participating catalog and permits more simultaneous loans, but it still does not include every Kindle Store title. Neither service gives permanent ownership of borrowed books.

Amazon describes Prime Reading as a rotating selection drawn from its wider Kindle subscription ecosystem. The exact titles depend on marketplace and can change. See Amazon’s Prime Reading help page and Prime’s reading overview.
What is Prime Reading?
Prime Reading is a reading benefit bundled into an active Amazon Prime membership. It is not access to the entire Kindle Store. Instead, Prime members can borrow a curated, rotating group of eligible ebooks and other publications without enrolling in Kindle Unlimited.
The selection may include novels, nonfiction, short reads, comics, manga, selected magazine issues and some titles with audiobook access. The catalog changes, and availability differs by country. Amazon’s help documentation allows Prime members to have up to 10 eligible titles at once.

How to borrow and return a Prime Reading title
- Open the Prime Reading page in a browser.
- Choose an eligible title and select Add to Library.
- Read it on a Kindle device or in a supported Kindle app.
- When you need to make room, open Manage Your Content and Devices.
- On the Your Content tab, filter by Prime Reading, select the title, choose Return this title, and confirm.
Prime Reading is most useful when you already pay for Prime for delivery, video, music, discounts or other benefits. Buying Prime solely for its reading catalog makes less sense if your preferred books are not listed there. Amazon’s published U.S. price reference is $14.99 per month or $139 per year, but check the live Prime page for the price and plan available to your account.
What is Kindle Unlimited?
Kindle Unlimited (KU) is a separate recurring subscription. You do not need Amazon Prime to join. It provides access to participating Kindle ebooks and, where offered, audiobooks, comics, manga and magazines through Kindle ereaders and Kindle apps.
A title must be enrolled in Kindle Unlimited to qualify. Amazon’s KDP Select documentation explains why participation is selective rather than universal: eligible authors and publishers enroll titles under the program. Consequently, KU does not contain every Kindle book, every major new release or every bestseller.
Borrowing rules
KU permits up to 20 active borrowed titles. Amazon does not describe a normal calendar due date; you return a title when you need space for another. The 20-title figure is a simultaneous-loan limit, not a monthly reading quota. Returning finished books allows you to borrow more, subject to current rules.

- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited help page also notes that catalog eligibility can change. A title may leave the program before you finish it.
Is Kindle Unlimited included with Prime?
No. Prime Reading is included with Prime, while Kindle Unlimited costs extra. The services can overlap because some titles appear in both catalogs and both use Kindle devices and apps, but they remain separate memberships. Amazon explicitly says Prime membership is not required for Kindle Unlimited; see Amazon’s KDP information.
The differences that matter when choosing
Catalog breadth and genre coverage
Amazon has described Prime Reading as offering thousands of rotating titles and has marketed Kindle Unlimited with counts in the millions. Those figures are snapshots, not permanent specifications; Amazon’s descriptions have changed over time. The useful distinction is that Prime Reading is much smaller, while KU has a substantially broader participating catalog.
Genre fit matters more than the headline number. Romance, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, thrillers, self-published work and backlist titles often have strong KU participation, but your exact authors and series are the deciding evidence. Search before subscribing rather than assuming a favorite book qualifies.

Prime requirement
Prime Reading requires an active Prime membership. Kindle Unlimited does not. If you do not need Prime’s non-reading benefits, comparing the full cost of Prime with KU is more appropriate than treating Prime Reading as a free alternative.
Loan limits and access
Prime Reading allows up to 10 eligible titles at once; KU allows up to 20. Neither is a purchase. Access continues only while the relevant membership is active and the title remains eligible.
Audiobooks
Some KU ebooks include companion narration, sometimes presented as “Read and Listen.” This is title-specific, not a guarantee that every ebook has an audiobook. On an eligible listing, look for the headset or with Narration indicator. Prime Reading also has selected audiobooks, but its smaller catalog rotates.
Magazines and the 2026 rule
For Kindle Unlimited, each magazine issue borrowed began counting toward the 20-title limit on April 22, 2026. Amazon also said it stopped automatically delivering new issues and would return excess borrowed issues by July 30, 2026. Magazine controls can differ by Kindle ereader, browser, Android app and iOS app, so heavy magazine readers should check the listing and device-specific instructions.

Borrowing versus owning
A borrowed Prime Reading or KU title is subscription access, not a permanent purchase. If you want to keep a book, buy it from the Kindle Store or use a qualifying keep benefit. First Reads is a separate Prime benefit that lets eligible members select certain pre-release ebooks to keep; it is not the same as Prime Reading. Amazon outlines Prime benefits, including First Reads, at Amazon Prime benefits.
How to check whether a specific book is included
- Search for the exact title, author and series volume in the Kindle Store.
- Look for a Kindle Unlimited badge and a Read for Free control for KU eligibility.
- For Prime Reading, use the Prime Reading catalog or confirm the Prime Reading label on the title page.
- Check the reader’s country marketplace; rights and availability vary by territory.
- For audio, look for the headset or with Narration indicator rather than assuming narration is included.
- Check whether the item is a magazine issue and, for KU, whether it will count toward the 20-title limit.
A Kindle ereader is optional. Amazon supports Kindle Unlimited through Kindle devices and Kindle apps for iOS, Android, computers and compatible tablets and smartphones. Free apps are available from Amazon’s Kindle reading apps page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens if you cancel?
Prime Reading access depends on an active Prime membership; KU access depends on an active Kindle Unlimited subscription. When the applicable membership ends, access to borrowed subscription titles generally ends. Purchased Kindle books and books obtained through a qualifying keep benefit are separate from those loans.
Free trials convert to paid subscriptions unless canceled under the applicable terms. Use the live account-management page to confirm your cancellation date and any billing consequences; Amazon’s KU help page provides the relevant management route.

Can a household share access?
Amazon says Kindle Unlimited members can share KU content with eligible Amazon Family members. Eligibility and setup depend on the current Amazon Family rules, and sharing content is not the same as creating separate unrestricted subscriptions. Prime household sharing and KU content sharing should be treated as separate arrangements. Check Amazon’s current household guidance before relying on this feature.
Which option fits your reading habits?
Choose Prime Reading when you already have Prime
- You read occasionally and your desired titles appear in the Prime Reading catalog.
- You value Prime’s shipping, video, music, shopping or other benefits independently of reading.
- You want to sample books without adding another subscription.
Choose Kindle Unlimited when you read frequently
- You expect to read several books a month.
- Your preferred genres and authors participate in KU.
- You want up to 20 active loans and broader access to ebooks, comics, manga, magazines or selected narration.
- You do not need Prime’s delivery or entertainment benefits.
Use both when the catalogs serve different needs
Existing Prime members may use Prime Reading for included titles and First Reads while using KU for greater genre depth. The combination is sensible only when the extra KU subscription produces enough reading value for your household.
Choose neither when purchasing is better
- Your main targets are current bestsellers or major releases absent from both catalogs.
- You read too infrequently to justify a recurring charge.
- You want permanent access rather than subscription loans.
- Your favorite authors do not participate.
- You primarily listen to audiobooks; a dedicated service such as Audible may fit better, depending on the titles and listening pattern.
How to compare the cost
Do not assume that reading one book automatically makes KU worthwhile. First confirm the current U.S. KU price on the live Kindle Unlimited signup page. Then:
- List the exact books you would otherwise buy and their current Kindle prices.
- Remove titles unavailable in KU; they do not contribute to subscription value.
- Estimate how many eligible books you will realistically finish each month.
- Account for catalog changes and the possibility that a title leaves before completion.
- If you already have Prime, compare only KU’s additional cost with the value of the extra books.
- If you do not have Prime, compare the full Prime membership cost—with all its benefits—with KU alone.
Prime Reading should be viewed as one component of Prime, not as a standalone substitute for Kindle Unlimited. KU is the stronger choice for frequent readers whose actual reading list is represented in its catalog.
