Afterward, the two celebrate together. Gunfire suddenly hits Villanelle. She pushes Eve away from danger, falls into the water, and is carried off by the current. Eve remains alive in the water, screaming. The final reveal is that Carolyn ordered the hit.
Why does Villanelle save Eve?
Villanelle’s last action is a choice to protect Eve rather than herself. Head writer Laura Neal described the death as the violent end of a life shaped by violence, but also as Villanelle’s final selfless act: she saves Eve, an act of goodness she had struggled to achieve. Jodie Comer, who played Villanelle, likewise saw the moment as selfless and as evidence of how much Eve had changed her life. Comer called the ending “inevitable” in an interview with ELLE.

#1 Best Overall
That is the writers’ and actor’s interpretation, not a requirement for every viewer to find the death emotionally satisfying. The finale offers the pair a chance to be together as lovers and partners, but does not suggest they have found a stable life beyond the immediate danger. Neal said the writers considered a happier ending, yet could not imagine Eve and Villanelle sustaining domestic bliss. The episode’s domestic moments test what life together might look like before abruptly returning them to violence. Neal discussed the choices behind the ending with TVLine.
What does Eve’s final scream mean?
The literal ending shows Eve alive after Villanelle disappears beneath the water. Neal said she wanted Eve’s scream to convey survival and release, not only grief or anger. As she put it, “It’s like, there’s a triumph in that scream. It’s like, ‘I survived. I’ve got new life. I’m going to go on, and I’m going to live, and I’m going to live well,’” in her TVLine interview.
The episode does not show what Eve does next. The scream can carry shock and grief as well as the survival Neal intended; it is not a complete account of Eve’s future or a guarantee that she will be untroubled by what happened.

Did Villanelle survive?
On screen, Villanelle is shot, falls into the river, and is carried away by the current. The finale does not show a rescue or reveal that she survived. Neal described the underwater imagery in spiritual terms, including Villanelle’s ascent, but that symbolic reading does not change what the episode depicts literally. The distinction between the events and the intended symbolism matters: the show offers no confirmed secret survival.
Why did Carolyn order Villanelle’s death?
Neal explained Carolyn’s decision as a bid for control over the story she set in motion by bringing Eve and Villanelle together, as well as a way for Carolyn to regain status with MI6. “I think it’s about ending the story that Carolyn began, and Carolyn wanting to have that power,” Neal told TVLine.
The episode does not identify who fired the shot. Neal said the shooter’s identity was less important than Carolyn’s decision to give the order. The show therefore establishes Carolyn’s responsibility without confirming a particular sniper or resolving fan theories about the person who pulled the trigger.

Which mysteries does the finale leave unresolved?
- The shooter: The finale does not name the person who fired at Villanelle. Neal left that question open while emphasizing Carolyn’s order.
- Kenny’s killer: The series does not fully resolve who killed Kenny. Neal said the writers chose to focus on Eve and Villanelle rather than answer every question, and described Carolyn’s pursuit of the killer as an excuse to act on her own desires. She discussed that choice with Salon.
- The Twelve: The finale shows Villanelle killing the leaders at the gathering, but does not fully identify the organization or provide a comprehensive account of its membership and reach.
Sandra Oh, who played Eve, acknowledged the tension between wanting a neat explanation and the ending the series chose. “As an audience you want to be satisfied. You want to know. Like, ‘I want to be satisfied. I want it tied up in a bow. I want to understand it.’ But that’s not it,” she said in an ELLE interview.
How to read the ending without confusing interpretation with plot
The finale’s central events are clear: Eve and Villanelle reunite, work together against The Twelve, and become lovers; Villanelle kills the group’s leaders, then is shot while saving Eve; Eve survives; Carolyn ordered the hit. What those events mean is more open. Neal’s explanation frames Villanelle’s final choice as evidence of change and Eve’s scream as survival, while viewers may still judge the ending as tragic, abrupt, or emotionally unearned. Those reactions do not alter the on-screen facts, and the episode does not resolve Eve’s next chapter.
