Kevin Nash played The Russian in The Punisher (2004); Billy Clements played the character in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). Nash criticized the newer portrayal on his Kliq This podcast, saying it looked unlike his version. The available reporting says Nash was not approached to reprise the role, but does not confirm why the filmmakers cast someone else.
Who played The Russian in each film?
| Film | Actor | Portrayal noted in reporting |
|---|---|---|
| The Punisher (2004) | Kevin Nash | Nash’s version had a blond buzz cut. |
| Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) | Billy Clements | The newer version had darker hair and a beard. |
The films feature different portrayals of the same character. Nash’s comments were about how the newer version looked compared with the one he played, rather than a claim that he appeared in the 2024 film.

What did Kevin Nash say about the recasting?
In remarks from Kliq This transcribed by Fightful on August 22, 2024, Nash said: “That looks nothing like the character I played. That looks nothing like The Russian. Looks like they gave somebody a favor.” The line was a sarcastic criticism of the resemblance, not an established account of how casting was decided.
Nash also rejected the suggestion that his reaction was an attempt to get movie work. “I love when people say, ‘Oh, Nash is trolling for movie parts.’ Again, I’m 65 years old,” he said. He then described the demands he associated with a film role: long workdays away from home, preparing lines around meals, rehearsing during makeup, and using breaks to learn dialogue. His age was the age he stated in that 2024 podcast discussion, not his current age.

- Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake yet. His days as Deadpool behind him, a listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. But when his homeworld is threatened, he reluctantly suits up as he tries to convince Wolverine? oh hell, just watch. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
How did Billy Clements respond?
Clements described the role as one he had worked to earn. “I really worked hard to get that role,” he told GameSpot on August 14, 2024, discussing auditions and his route from extra work to the part. GameSpot reported that Clements said he gained 32 pounds of muscle and studied Russian for three months in preparation. Those figures come from Clements’s account as reported by GameSpot, not an independent measurement. He praised Nash’s portrayal and said landing the role meant a great deal to him.

ComicBookMovie’s August 7, 2024 report says Nash was not approached to reprise The Russian. It does not establish why. The report notes possible explanations, but neither Nash nor the filmmakers are shown confirming a reason, so it would be speculative to attribute the decision to availability, cost, or a deliberate preference for a different look.

Director Shawn Levy’s broader comments about being “judicious” with multiverse characters, quoted by CinemaBlend, describe overall cameo choices rather than this specific casting. They do not answer why Clements played The Russian.
