Kevin McGarry saw Nathan and Elizabeth’s romance as a long-running possibility—but his pre-season hopes were not a promise about the show’s future. In Season 11, the characters finally declared their love and kissed in the penultimate episode, then entered a relationship in the finale. McGarry described the payoff as “six seasons coming” and explained why he believed the slow pace mattered.
What McGarry hoped for before Season 11
In an Entertainment Tonight interview published March 21, 2024, McGarry said he had always liked Nathan and Elizabeth as a couple and thought Nathan had been created for Elizabeth. He interpreted Nathan’s lack of a partner while Elizabeth pursued a relationship with Lucas as deliberate, and believed the characters were meant to end up together.
Those were McGarry’s hopes and reading of the story, not a guarantee of what the writers would do. He also recognized that some viewers might feel hurt by the way Elizabeth and Lucas’s story ended, while stressing that Lucas remained important to Hope Valley.
Why the slow burn mattered to him
After the penultimate Season 11 episode, McGarry told TV Guide on June 16, 2024, that the romantic moment was “six seasons coming.” He described Nathan and Elizabeth’s connection as grounded in trust, friendship and love, and said both characters had finally become vulnerable and open with each other.

McGarry’s account of the pacing was shaped by the characters’ histories. Elizabeth needed time to grieve her husband, Jack, and later built a relationship with Lucas. Nathan had already declared his feelings in Season 8 without receiving an answer. McGarry said it mattered that Elizabeth made the decisive move in Season 11; he also reported that Erin Krakow advocated for Elizabeth to explain her feelings before the relationship advanced. These details are McGarry’s description of the creative process in that interview.
Spoilers: what happened in the Season 11 turning point
The penultimate episode, “Run to You,” ends with Elizabeth and Nathan telling each other “I love you” and sharing their first kiss. The finale, “Anything for Love,” moves them into a relationship. McGarry described the new couple as facing an easier partnership after clearing up confusion and speaking openly about their feelings.

That is what aired in Season 11; it is distinct from McGarry’s earlier prediction that the characters were meant to be together. Asked about what came next, he spoke hopefully but cautiously: he said Season 12 details could change and did not promise that Nathan and Elizabeth were definitively endgame. His remark to TV Guide that “people love love” was an expression of optimism about the audience’s response, not confirmation of a future plot.

Hallmark currently promotes When Calls the Heart as streaming on Hallmark+, and Hallmark’s catalogue identifies it as a Hallmark Original Series. Availability can change and may vary by location. Amazon Prime Video lists Season 11 for digital purchase; that listing is not evidence of a DVD or Blu-ray release. The show’s source novel by Janette Oke is a separate option for readers interested in the story’s origins, not a Season 11 companion book.
