Jonathan “J.T.” Jackson filed a $12 million lawsuit against Kevin Hart in July 2024, alleging that Hart breached a 2021 settlement by leaving out agreed language in a public statement about the sex-tape and extortion controversy. The amount is what Jackson sought, not money a court awarded. Reporting available as of October 8, 2026, does not establish the suit’s current status or outcome.
What Jackson alleges Hart promised
Jackson’s complaint, as described by the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post, says the two reached a written settlement in July 2021. Jackson alleges that the agreement was intended to help clear his name and repair his professional reputation.

According to Jackson’s account of the agreement, Hart was to say that the charges against Jackson had been dropped, that Jackson had nothing to do with an extortion plot, and that Hart had lost a valuable friendship. Jackson alleges that in an Instagram video on October 27, 2021, Hart acknowledged the dropped charges and the lost friendship but did not expressly say Jackson had nothing to do with the allegations. The complaint reportedly called the agreed wording “absolutely crucial” to repairing reputational harm.
Those are allegations about the settlement’s terms and Hart’s compliance, not findings by a court. The available reporting does not independently establish the complete agreement or decide whether Hart breached it.

What the $12 million suit seeks
Jackson’s July 2024 complaint in Los Angeles County Superior Court named Hart, Hartbeat LLC, and several Doe defendants. The Los Angeles Times reported claims including breach of written contract, fraud, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Jackson sought $12 million, punitive damages to be determined at trial, legal costs and fees, and injunctive relief. The requested relief included a public exoneration and removal of statements about Jackson in Hart’s 2019 Netflix docuseries, Don’t F— This Up. These are remedies requested in the complaint; they are not a judgment or award.

How the case connects to the 2017 controversy
The civil lawsuit follows the 2017 Las Vegas sex-tape controversy and the criminal extortion allegations made against Jackson. The Los Angeles Times reported that prosecutors later dropped the charges against him. Hart’s Netflix docuseries also discussed Jackson’s connection to the controversy, which Jackson cited as part of the reputational harm he says he suffered.
Jackson’s criminal case and his later civil suit against Hart are separate proceedings: the first concerned criminal charges that were dropped; the second alleges breach of a settlement and seeks civil remedies. A separate $60 million suit brought by Montia Sabbag was dismissed, according to the Los Angeles Times; it is not part of Jackson’s $12 million claim.

What Jackson added in August 2024
Jackson filed an amended complaint on August 6, 2024. As summarized by the Los Angeles Times, it added allegations that Hart and his legal team submitted fabricated or misleading evidence to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and that investigators did not adequately verify it. The reporting does not establish that evidence was fabricated, that investigators acted improperly, or that Hart is liable.
Jackson’s attorney, Daniel Reback, told The Washington Post: “The facts in the complaint speak for themselves.” Reback also said, “We are confident that the lawsuit will end with Mr. Jackson’s complete victory and vindication.” Those statements express counsel’s position, not a court’s conclusion.

Has the lawsuit been decided?
The reporting available as of October 8, 2026 establishes the July and August 2024 filings, but not a later ruling, settlement, dismissal, trial date, or current procedural status for Jackson’s suit. A TMZ report dated October 7, 2026 concerns a different case involving Hart and his former assistant Miesha Shakes, with Sabbag as a proposed witness; it does not update Jackson’s lawsuit.
