At a Cannes press conference about Horizon: An American Saga, Kevin Costner said he is “conscious of race” and described trying to represent different people in his films. He connected that awareness to having lived in Compton, California, while stressing that he cannot represent every group in every movie.
What Costner said about Compton and race
In an interview transcript from the Cannes press conference, Costner said: “I’m conscious of race. I lived in a place called Compton, California. I funded a movie called Black or White; it was my version of a level of racism that exists in our country, Compton, and Beverly Hills.” GMA News Online’s transcript records his account; it does not independently verify his residence history. His phrasing was that he lived in Compton, not that the transcript established he grew up there.
How he described representation in his films
Costner linked his comments to his approach to filmmaking, but also acknowledged a limit: “I can’t fill every box every time I try to make a movie, but I’m conscious of what’s at stake and trying to represent people.” He was speaking in the context of Horizon: An American Saga, rather than issuing a standalone policy statement about representation.
As examples of what he considers important in Westerns and his films, Costner referred to Native American characters in Dances with Wolves, women in Horizon, and African American and Chinese people. He described his intention for Dances with Wolves this way: “I believe that the Native Americans in Dances with Wolves should be very well-rounded people. I didn’t think I was breaking ground. It’s just the way I wanted to see them.” These remarks document how he characterized his aims; they are not, by themselves, an independent assessment of how the films represent those groups.

The remarks themselves were made during the Cannes discussion of Horizon: An American Saga, where Costner also spoke about whom he tries to include in his work and the limits of doing so in any one film.
