Kevin Costner called John Mulaney’s 2024 Oscars routine about Field of Dreams “amazing” and “a genius” bit of comedy, telling PEOPLE he watched it twice and was touched by what Mulaney said. The interview came as the 1989 film marked its 35th anniversary.

Costner, who played Ray Kinsella in Field of Dreams, told PEOPLE: “I couldn’t believe that guy. Amazing. I watched it a second time,” adding that Mulaney was “gifted.”

He said the routine moved him: “What a chance, because there’s always people in the Oscars trying to rush you. And he went fast. But what he said, I was very touched by it. I should talk to him because I was really impressed. He was a genius.” Costner also summed up his response simply: “I loved what he did.”

What was Mulaney’s ‘Field of Dreams’ joke?
At the March 2024 Oscars, Mulaney presented the Best Sound award and used the moment to retell the film’s premise as a comic chain of decisions. In his version, an Iowa farmer mows down corn, finds a baseball field, and decides to watch ghosts play baseball while the bank is asking about the mortgage.
That is Mulaney’s comedic framing, not a line-for-line account of the film. The joke compresses the story into its striking central image: a farmer builds a baseball field in a cornfield after hearing voices, and the consequences collide with ordinary financial pressures.

How old is Field of Dreams?
Field of Dreams was released in 1989. The April 2024 interview marked 35 years since its release. Costner stars as Ray Kinsella, an Iowa corn farmer who hears voices urging him to build a baseball field.
The cast also includes Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones, Dwier Brown, Amy Madigan, and Gaby Hoffmann. Liotta died in 2022 at age 67.
