The Connecticut farmhouse associated with their rural life was not a refuge they found after the loss: Bacon bought it in 1983, decades earlier. The record supports a story about perspective and a long-running city-and-country life—not proof that the farm alone brought him “true happiness.”
Did Kevin Bacon lose his fortune to Bernie Madoff?
The couple suffered a major financial loss through Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, but the claim that Bacon lost everything overstates what they said publicly. In 2009, Kyra Sedgwick told the Associated Press, “we did not lose everything,” and described losing hard-earned money they had believed was safe. She also acknowledged that others lost more. CBS News / Associated Press, June 10, 2009.
Bacon later characterized the loss more starkly. In 2024, he said they had lost “most of our money.” That description is qualitative: it does not establish how much money they lost in dollars. The Guardian reported in 2017 that Bacon declined to confirm an amount. The Guardian, June 30, 2024; The Guardian, May 20, 2017.
When did Bacon buy the Connecticut farm?
Bacon bought a farmhouse in Sharon, Connecticut, in 1983—long before the Madoff scandal. Architectural Digest reported that he was drawn to the property for peace and privacy after the intensity of Footloose. In a 2023 account of Bacon’s podcast interview, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that wanting a horse was part of his motivation. Bacon described the surrounding area as “very, very rural,” adding, “It’s not a vacation spot; it’s farmland.” Architectural Digest, March 20, 2026; San Francisco Chronicle, September 23, 2023.

Was the farm where the family lived full-time?
The reporting describes a split between rural Connecticut and New York City, not a permanent move away from the city. The couple retained the farmhouse while New York served as the primary home for their family and the place where they raised their children. Architectural Digest’s 2026 account reported that they continued to own the Connecticut property at that time; property ownership and use can change. Architectural Digest, March 20, 2026.

In a 2017 Guardian interview, Bacon recalled that after the bad day, he and Sedgwick focused on what remained: “children, health, love, a nice home.” He called those “the biggest cliches,” but said they helped orient them toward what they still had rather than only what they had lost. He also described the experience as a warning to pay attention to one’s money. The Guardian, May 20, 2017.

In another 2017 interview, Bacon said the experience left “a sick kind of feeling,” but added, “I think you have to live your life trying to avoid bitterness.” WBEZ reported that Sedgwick’s steady television work helped the couple through the difficult financial period. These accounts show how Bacon described coping with the setback; they do not establish that the farm itself caused happiness or resolved the loss. WBEZ Chicago, May 12, 2017.

What the headline gets wrong—and what the story shows
- “Lost his fortune” is too absolute. Sedgwick said they did not lose everything; Bacon later said they lost most of their money, without giving a verified sum.
- The farm did not come after the Madoff loss. Bacon’s reported purchase dates to 1983.
- “True happiness” is an interpretation, not a measurable reported outcome. The interviews describe gratitude, family, perspective and an effort to avoid bitterness, alongside a longstanding rural property.
