He did not give an exact loss amount in the remarks reported by Vanity Fair. Instead, Bacon described recovering a portion after Madoff’s trial, keeping the loss in perspective, and taking a practical lesson from it: “If something is too good to be true, it’s too good to be true.”
What Kevin Bacon said about the Madoff loss
In an October 12, 2022 report about Bacon’s appearance on the SmartLess podcast, Vanity Fair quoted him saying that he and Sedgwick had “most of our money” with Madoff. Bacon said they recovered a portion of their losses after Madoff’s trial, but did not state how much they had lost or how much they recovered.
The distinction matters: “most of our money” describes how much of the couple’s money was invested, not a dollar figure for their loss. The reported remarks do not establish a precise total.
Why Bacon called it a life lesson
Bacon’s stated takeaway was direct: “If something is too good to be true, it’s too good to be true.” The remark was his reflection on the experience, not a detailed account of the investment or a claim that he had identified Madoff’s fraud in advance.

He said they tried to remember that others had been affected more severely.
