Kesha said she learned after her August 1, 2024, Lollapalooza performance in Chicago that the prop knife she used during “Backstabber” had allegedly been replaced with a real butcher knife. The reports recount her statement; they do not independently establish who made the switch or exactly how it happened.
What Kesha said happened
After the set, Kesha posted that the prop knife had gone missing and had been replaced by a real butcher knife taken from the kitchen. The Independent reproduced her post: “Sooooo apparently the prop knife went missing and they replaced it with a real butcher knife stolen from the kitchen. And I didn’t know. Till now.” She followed it with: “So watch that again…”
The words “apparently” and “stolen from the kitchen” are part of Kesha’s reported account, not independently established findings. Billboard also reported her account and said the knife was used during “Backstabber.” The Independent’s report and Billboard’s report attribute the claim to her.
When and where the performance took place
The incident Kesha described concerned her performance of “Backstabber” at Lollapalooza in Chicago on Thursday, August 1, 2024. She said she did not know about the alleged substitution until after the performance.

What remains unconfirmed
The reviewed reports do not identify who replaced the prop, establish the precise circumstances, or say whether the knife had been inspected or secured. Billboard reported that it contacted Kesha’s representatives and Lollapalooza for comment, but its coverage does not provide a response resolving responsibility. No conclusion about an investigation or the people involved is established in those reports.
Why the distinction matters
A real butcher knife and a theatrical prop are not interchangeable in a live performance. Kesha’s account raises a clear stage-safety concern, but the available reporting does not establish how the substitution occurred or what safeguards were in place. It therefore supports reporting what she said, not assigning blame or treating the circumstances as independently verified.
