In the October 31, 2024, PBS interview, Russell joined series creator Debora Cahn to discuss the show’s second season, her role as Kate Wyler and the earlier career-defining series Felicity and The Americans.
What did Keri Russell say about The Diplomat?
Russell said the writing drew her to the series and to Kate Wyler, the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. She described the character’s appeal as “the messiness, the foul mouth, the crazy marriage.” For Russell, that specificity made Kate compelling rather than conventionally polished.

She also called the series a “love letter to the State Department and the people who do this incredible work.” The remarks came in a PBS episode featuring Russell and Cahn, the show’s creator and executive producer. Netflix’s current series information identifies Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler and Cahn as creator, showrunner and executive producer: Netflix Media Center.
Which election was she referring to?
The interview aired on October 31, 2024, shortly before the November 5 U.S. presidential election. “The Election” in the segment’s framing refers to that 2024 contest, not an upcoming election. The PBS episode introduction situates the program in the final days before voting; the conversation also turns to Russell’s roles and the new season of The Diplomat.

Was Keri Russell in The Americans?
Yes. Russell played Elizabeth Jennings, an undercover Russian spy living in suburban New Jersey during the Cold War, in The Americans. In the PBS conversation, host Christiane Amanpour brought up the series alongside Russell’s earlier television role in Felicity and asked whether her experience in The Americans affected her casting in The Diplomat. Netflix’s later profile of Russell also discusses both series and her interest in playing imperfect, complicated women.
What has happened with The Diplomat since the interview?
The 2024 conversation focused on the show’s second season. Netflix’s subsequent official material covers a third season and a fourth season, including a fictional presidential succession storyline. Those events belong to the series’ invented plot; they should not be read as accounts of real U.S. political events. Netflix’s series page identifies the show and its creative team.

Russell was also named a 2026 Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nominee for The Diplomat. The Television Academy record lists the nomination; it does not establish her as a winner for the role.
