Kenneth Alexander Mitchell, the actor who played four characters in Star Trek: Discovery, died on February 24, 2024, at age 49. His family said he had been diagnosed with ALS more than five years before his death.

Mitchell died on February 24, 2024, aged 49, according to the official StarTrek.com remembrance. Born in Toronto, Ontario, on November 25, 1974, he built a career across television and film.

What roles did Kenneth Mitchell play on Star Trek?

On Star Trek: Discovery, Mitchell played the Klingons Kol and Kol-Sha, the Klingon monk Tenavik, and the character Aurellio. He also voiced characters in an episode of the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Mitchell described the perspective behind his Klingon performances in a 2017 interview with StarTrek.com: “Whether someone is good or bad is all about perspective, and it’s about understanding that culture. You’ll get to know the Klingons on our show, and then people can decide if we really are the villains.”

What did his family say about his ALS diagnosis?

CBS News reported that Mitchell had been diagnosed with ALS more than five years before his death, citing the family’s announcement. The report does not establish an exact diagnosis date.

In the family statement reproduced by CBS News, his loved ones recalled the challenges he faced and wrote: “And in true Ken fashion, he managed to rise above each one with grace and commitment to living a full and joyous life in each moment.” They added: “He lived by the principles that each day is a gift and that we never walk alone.”

What other films and television shows featured Mitchell?

Among Mitchell’s screen credits were the 2004 hockey drama Miracle, in which he played an Olympic hopeful, and Captain Marvel, where he portrayed the father of Carol Danvers. The StarTrek.com remembrance also notes his work across other film and television productions.

Who survives Kenneth Mitchell?

StarTrek.com reported that Mitchell was survived by his wife, actor Susan May Pratt, and their two children. The remembrance said he requested that gifts be directed either to ALS research or to support for his children; it did not specify a particular donation organization.
