The Associated Press reported an approximately 13-minute performance with ten songs, five of them from Lamar’s 2024 album GNX. “Not Like Us” was not performed straight through when first hinted: Lamar briefly played its opening riff, moved into “Luther” with SZA, and brought the track back later in the show. That pause-and-return made the song’s eventual appearance a dramatic moment in the sequence.

What viewers saw—and what the TV edit changed
The live sequence and the broadcast edit were not identical in every lyric. AP reported that the televised version left out customary slurs and swear words and skipped the word “pedophile.” That description applies to the TV edit; it does not mean every contentious lyric was removed.
The song is a diss track containing allegations about Drake, which Drake disputed. Performing it at the Super Bowl was a musical and cultural event, not a finding about the truth of those allegations.

Guests, staging, and the show’s visual frame
Samuel L. Jackson appeared as Uncle Sam, and Lamar began atop a Buick Grand National Experimental—the car referenced by the album title GNX. The Los Angeles Times described a street-corner setting and noted a prop lamppost during “Man at the Garden.” SZA joined Lamar for “Luther” and “All the Stars,” Serena Williams appeared dancing during “Not Like Us,” and DJ Mustard joined for “TV Off” (Los Angeles Times review).
The Uncle Sam character and red, white, and blue staging gave the show an American cultural tableau around the music. That is an interpretation of the reported imagery, not a stated production explanation. The Times called the performance a “victory lap,” a critical characterization rather than a neutral description.

Why the performance drew attention
“Not Like Us” had recently won the Grammy Awards for song of the year and record of the year, according to AP. Its Super Bowl appearance placed a widely discussed diss track in front of a mass television audience, while the tease, detour into a duet, and return made its position in the set especially conspicuous.
Apple Music’s February 4, 2025 announcement promoted its Road to Halftime programming and described platform-specific listening results: Apple said Lamar was a top 10 global artist on its service in 2024, that GNX reached No. 1 in 129 countries upon release, and that “Not Like Us” was Apple Music’s top-streamed song worldwide. Those are Apple Music claims about its own platform, not universal chart rankings (Apple Music announcement).
