Ken Jennings said Mayim Bialik’s departure from the syndicated Jeopardy! caught him by surprise. “It took me off guard, because I loved working with my Mayim and I’m going to miss her,” he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published Dec. 25, 2023, and later reported by The Guardian.
What Ken Jennings said about Bialik’s exit
Jennings’s reaction was personal: he said he had not expected the news and would miss working with Bialik. The Guardian quoted him from his Hollywood Reporter interview; he was not reported as speaking to the press on the day Bialik announced her departure.
Their shared hosting arrangement had been announced in 2022. Executive producer Michael Davies said the franchise needed multiple hosts, with Jennings beginning the syndicated season and Bialik taking over those episodes in January while also hosting Celebrity Jeopardy! in primetime. Davies said they did not intend to switch hosts constantly. That was the plan at the time, not a description of the arrangement after Bialik’s departure. Jeopardy.com’s announcement also quoted Davies saying the show had “so much Jeopardy! to make, and so many plans for the future, that we always knew we would need multiple hosts for the franchise…”
Why Mayim Bialik left the syndicated show
Bialik announced on Dec. 15, 2023, that Sony had told her she would no longer host the syndicated version. Sony’s public explanation, reported by the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press, was that it had chosen one host for the syndicated show the following season to maintain continuity for viewers. Sony named Jennings as the sole host of syndicated Jeopardy!.

That is the studio’s stated rationale. Bialik’s announcement establishes that Sony informed her she would no longer host the syndicated edition; the cited reporting does not establish a fuller private account of how the decision was made. Jennings’s surprise should not be treated as evidence of the studio’s internal process.
What “leaving Jeopardy!” meant
The change concerned the syndicated daily program, not necessarily every Jeopardy! production. Sony also said it was grateful for Bialik’s contributions and hoped to work with her on primetime specials. The distinction matters because the franchise includes syndicated episodes, primetime programs and spinoffs, and hosting arrangements can differ between them.

The 2022 announcement helps explain why viewers had seen Jennings and Bialik as co-hosts: both had signed hosting deals, but their duties varied across the schedule. Davies also said at the time that the show reached more than 27 million viewers each week. That was his historical audience claim in the 2022 announcement, not a current audience figure.

Sony said Jennings would be the sole host of the syndicated program the following season. That statement describes the plan announced in December 2023; it should not be read as a claim about later seasons or the current lineup.
