Ken Jennings and Matt Damon answered the final question correctly on Jimmy Kimmel’s celebrity edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, winning the show’s $1 million top prize for Water.org. The win came after their game stretched across two installments—and while Kimmel’s mock rivalry with Damon supplied the running joke.
How Jennings and Damon’s game reached the final question
The team’s run began on the July 23, 2025 installment, which ended with Jennings and Damon at $250,000 and three lifelines still available, according to TV Insider’s July 30, 2025 interview with Jennings. They returned the following week with two questions left.
Jennings later described the format’s pressure this way: “You cannot let a ball go by and say, ‘That’s not my pitch.’ You can’t miss a question.” He compared the feeling to “teetering over an Indiana Jones death pit,” because the next question could end the game. He also said having a partner made it easier.
The final answer was “susurrus”
The last question asked which word describes the sound of wind moving through tree leaves. The options were “apricity,” “petrichor,” “susurrus,” and “eudaemonia.” The pair used a 50/50 lifeline, which left “petrichor” and “susurrus.” Jennings knew that petrichor is the pleasant smell associated with rain and reasoned that susurrus must describe the sound. He was right, and the team won $1 million for Water.org, the nonprofit Damon co-founded in 2009, as TVLine reported.

Kimmel’s mock feud became part of the show
The prize was real; the “worst nightmare” framing was comic exaggeration. Kimmel and Damon’s familiar mock rivalry gave the episode its banter. Damon praised his teammate: “It is so awesome having Ken Jennings as your partner in a trivia game.” Jennings joked, in effect, that everyone except Kimmel loved Damon, prompting Kimmel to answer, “You’re turning this into an uprising!”
Jennings summed up the close call with a laugh: “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, I think.” Kimmel continued the joke by teasing that he would appear on Jeopardy! with someone Damon disliked. The exchange framed the competition as a friendly celebrity rivalry, not an actual conflict.

Why the pairing worked
Jennings brought deep trivia experience, while the show’s partner format let the two talk through uncertainty instead of leaving one contestant to decide alone. Jennings said that shared decision-making made the tense format easier. Their final reasoning also shows the value of using a lifeline to narrow a choice: once the 50/50 removed two options, Jennings could distinguish the remaining words by what each means.
The result was a million-dollar win for Water.org—not a personal prize for Damon and Jennings. Coverage of the episode establishes the result and the final question; it does not establish current streaming availability.
