Part 3 of the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce’s anniversary documentary series looks at the city from 1990 to 2016, when real-estate growth and wine-industry development helped reshape Kelowna. Titled “Built & Bottled,” the installment also traces the period’s strains, including recession, infrastructure pressure and the 2003 Okanagan Mountain wildfire.

What “Kelownaforniation” means in the documentary

KelownaNow uses “Kelownaforniation” as shorthand for Kelowna’s pursuit of a California-associated location and lifestyle as it grew into a wine, golf and culinary destination. It is the article’s framing, not an established planning or academic term. The installment’s title, “Built & Bottled,” links two changes during 1990–2016: expansion of real estate and the development of the wine industry. KelownaNow’s account of the documentary

The story is not that orchards simply disappeared. The article describes a shift from orchards toward vineyards and wine tourism while noting that orchards remained part of the landscape. Golf and food tourism also feature in its picture of Kelowna’s emerging destination economy.

Milestones and people featured in part 3

UBC Okanagan opens in 2005

The article presents UBC Okanagan’s 2005 opening as a turning point, associating the university with increased prestige and the development of future talent. That is the documentary’s interpretation of the milestone, rather than a separately quantified assessment.

Interviewees connect development with lived experience

The documentary features former chamber presidents Laura Thurnheer and Steve Thomson, as well as Troika developer Renee Merrifield. Thurnheer discusses the change from orchards to vineyards; Merrifield speaks about new neighbourhoods and density; and Thomson reflects on the wildfire and the community response.

The narrator’s summary

The unnamed documentary narrator describes the period this way: “By the early-1990s, a version of the California dream had taken hold in the Valley,” and later: “In three decades, Kelowna built, bottled and educated its way into an entirely new identity.” KelownaNow does not identify the narrator by name.

Growth came with disruption and pressure

The article’s account is not solely a story of economic and cultural change. It includes a recession and growing transport and infrastructure strains, alongside the 2003 Okanagan Mountain wildfire. KelownaNow reports that the fire scorched 230 homes and forced the evacuation of one-third of the city. Those figures are reported by KelownaNow in 2026; its article does not identify an underlying official source for them.

Thomson’s documentary reflection emphasizes community support and rebuilding after the fire. That response sits alongside the expansion described in the film: the same decades that brought new neighbourhoods, vineyards and a university also demanded adaptation to disruption and the pressures of a growing city.

“Built & Bottled” is part 3 of a documentary series made for the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce’s 120th anniversary. The earlier installments are “The Founding 50 — 1906–56” and “Becoming a Modern Kelowna — 1956–90.” KelownaNow’s October 11, 2026 article said a fourth installment, “The Speed of Change — 2016-present,” was expected in the coming weeks; that announcement is time-sensitive, so its current availability should be confirmed with the Chamber.
