Reports say leaked pre-debut practice footage showed BLACKPINK’s Lisa Manobal and other members singing or rapping along to songs containing a racial slur. Lisa later apologized, saying she had not understood the term while growing up in Thailand, that she understands it now, and that she will not use it again. The episode prompted disagreement over how to weigh her upbringing against an artist’s responsibility to understand the history and harm of language associated with music they perform.
What the reported footage showed
The Korea Herald reported that footage surfaced online in March 2025 and showed Lisa rapping along to songs containing a racial slur while she was a YG Entertainment trainee. Maeil Business Newspaper (MK) also described the material as pre-debut practice footage and reported that other BLACKPINK members were involved. The recording’s exact date is not established, and the footage has not been independently authenticated here; these details describe how the outlets characterized it.
The episode concerns the reported leaked footage, not the separate 2020 dispute over religious imagery in a BLACKPINK music video.
Timeline of the controversy
- Before BLACKPINK’s 2016 debut: Reports describe Lisa as a YG Entertainment trainee when the practice material was recorded. Its precise recording date is not established.
- March 2025: The Korea Herald reported that the footage surfaced online.
- 2025 Coachella period: MK reported that the controversy arose as Lisa was preparing for a performance.
- September 2026: The Korea Herald and MK reported that Lisa addressed the incident in a Variety interview at the Toronto International Film Festival and apologized.
Lisa’s apology and explanation
As quoted by The Korea Herald, Lisa said, “I really have to apologize.” She explained, “To be honest, I’m Thai, and I grew up in Thailand. There isn’t any education for that, so at the time, I didn’t know.” The outlet reported that she said she had since educated herself and would not use the term again.

MK reproduced a similar account from the Variety interview: “When I was growing up in Thailand, I didn’t have the opportunity to learn about that expression, so I didn’t know what it meant at the time. I understand it properly now, and I will never use it again. It was clearly wrong.” These are quotations as reported by the Korean outlets; the original Variety interview page was not available to verify them independently.
Why reactions differed
The Korea Herald described sharply divided online responses, not a representative survey or settled public consensus. Some commenters emphasized that people raised outside the United States may not be taught the slur’s history. Others argued that an artist performing rap and drawing on Black cultural influence has a responsibility to learn the context of the language involved.

The disagreement turns on several distinct questions: what Lisa knew at the time and what language education she had access to; the slur’s history and harm; the responsibilities that come with performing music rooted in another community; and whether an apology acknowledges the wrongdoing and commits to different future conduct. Her explanation addresses her stated knowledge at the time and her current position. It does not establish how every affected listener received the apology.
For broader context, Yonhap quoted Ramapo College communication arts associate professor David Oh distinguishing appropriation from appreciation: “Appropriation borrows from another culture in order to elevate the person who takes; appreciation borrows from another culture with permission in order to elevate the culture and people from whom they’re borrowing.” Oh also described appropriation as potentially mocking people through racial caricatures and stereotypes. This framework offers one way to discuss cultural borrowing; it does not, on its own, settle the facts or judgment in Lisa’s case.

A separate 2020 controversy
BLACKPINK also faced a different cultural-sensitivity criticism in 2020. Yonhap reported that viewers objected to a statue of the Hindu deity Lord Ganesha appearing near Lisa in the “How You Like That” music video, including its use as a prop and placement near a person’s feet. YG Entertainment later re-edited the video to crop out the statue. That dispute concerned religious imagery; it is distinct from the later reported footage and racial-slur controversy.
