What the Disney Legends honor recognizes
Disney announced its 2024 Disney Legends class on March 19, naming 14 people, including Ripa in the Television category. The company describes the award as recognition for artists and visionaries whose contributions have had a significant, enduring impact on Disney. CEO Bob Iger called it “the highest honor our company can bestow on anyone,” reserved for people whose talent and achievement have earned them an enduring place in Disney history. The Walt Disney Company’s class announcement also notes that the program began in 1987, with Fred MacMurray as its inaugural honoree.

Why Ripa called the recognition surreal
In Disney’s pre-ceremony Q&A, Ripa said she already regarded the job and her longevity as gifts. “It feels surreal. I feel like the job is the gift, and I feel like the longevity is the gift. And so, the honor on top of the job just feels kind of gluttonous, if I’m being honest. But it’s a privilege and a true honor.” Her remarks in Disney’s Q&A make clear that she was grateful for the recognition, while also joking that an award on top of the career she valued felt like more than she could ask for.
Her ceremony remarks put the award in a family context
The ceremony took place August 11, 2024, at the Honda Center in Anaheim during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Ripa reflected on meeting her husband, Mark Consuelos, while they worked on All My Children, and on taking their parents to Walt Disney World with their grandchildren.
#1 Best Overall
“It’s a very rare thing in this industry to be employed consistently, but to be employed by the same company for 34 years is my great good fortune,” she said. She closed by calling time at Walt Disney World with her family “the privilege of my lifetime” and described the Legend honor as “just the pixie dust on top of a sundae.” D23 published Ripa’s ceremony remarks.
