Dance Moms alum Kelly Hyland disclosed a breast cancer diagnosis in May 2024. Reports described it as stage 1, grade 3 invasive carcinoma. “Very fast-moving” refers to the cancer’s grade—not its stage—and the reports do not establish Hyland’s health status today.

What Kelly Hyland disclosed

ABC News reported on May 30, 2024, that Hyland’s daughter Brooke confirmed her mother’s breast cancer diagnosis. The Los Angeles Times reported the previous day that Hyland had announced it on Instagram and was undergoing treatment. The diagnosis was reported as stage 1, grade 3 invasive carcinoma.

Hyland is known for appearing on Dance Moms with her daughters Paige and Brooke. The Los Angeles Times also noted her later podcast work, including co-hosting Dear Dance Mom and Back to the Barre. Los Angeles Times, May 29, 2024; ABC News, May 30, 2024.

How she said the diagnosis was found

In an account of her E! News interview, the Los Angeles Times reported that Hyland noticed a lump in March 2024 and booked a mammogram. She said her previous mammogram, eight months earlier, had been clear. The later mammogram and sonogram showed a mass, and a biopsy confirmed it was malignant.

Hyland told ABC News: “I had just had one done eight months prior and the results came back clean. However, this new mammogram and sonogram did not, it came back showing a mass.” A prior clear mammogram is part of her reported personal timeline; it does not rule out a later finding or establish screening advice for other people. What “grade 3” and “stage 1” mean

Grade and stage describe different things. Grade concerns how cancer cells look compared with normal cells and helps a care team estimate likely growth behavior. The American Cancer Society explains: “A high grade number (grade 3) means a faster-growing cancer that’s more likely to spread.” That is the basis for the “fast-moving” description in coverage.

Stage describes the extent of the cancer, as reported here as stage 1. Grade 3 does not mean the cancer was advanced, prove that it had spread, or by itself determine an individual prognosis. The reports do not include a treating clinician’s statement or Hyland’s pathology report, so they do not provide further clinical detail. American Cancer Society: Breast Cancer Grade.

What was reported about her treatment—and what is not known now

ABC News reported on May 30, 2024, that Hyland was in her second of six planned chemotherapy treatments. That is a snapshot of her treatment at that date, not confirmation that she completed chemotherapy or a current medical update.

The reports cited here do not establish Hyland’s condition, treatment status, or any later medical developments as of October 8, 2026. Brooke Hyland said in a statement to ABC News: “Since releasing the news to the public— the love & thoughts pouring in my mom/family’s direction has been incredible.” ABC News, May 30, 2024.

What readers should take from the report

Hyland’s account describes her own diagnosis and care, not a general rule about symptoms or screening. A lump or other personal concern should be discussed with a qualified clinician; this story cannot diagnose an individual or determine an appropriate screening schedule.
