The order weighs a role’s staying power and franchise visibility alongside how distinctly it showcases Reeves. Film reviews and grosses provide context, not a direct measure of a character’s popularity. “Worst” means lower in this selection, not objectively bad.
20. Tom Ludlow — Street Kings (2008)
As a troubled Los Angeles detective, Reeves leads a gritty crime thriller. It is a substantial starring part, but Ludlow has less claim on Reeves’s public image than the characters attached to his most visible franchises. The available film rankings do not measure this role’s individual popularity.
19. Frank — Destination Wedding (2018)
Frank is a deliberately prickly romantic-comedy lead, giving Reeves room for dry, tightly controlled banter rather than action-hero stoicism. The intimate, dialogue-driven film is a useful counterpoint to his larger-scale work, though there is no comparable audience metric establishing it as a fan favorite.
18. William Foster — Replicas (2018)
In this science-fiction thriller, Reeves plays a scientist confronting the consequences of an experiment involving his family. The lead role demonstrates his continued interest in speculative stories, but it has not become as central to his screen identity as Neo or John Wick.

17. Kai — 47 Ronin (2013)
Reeves plays an outsider drawn into a fantasy-action retelling of the Japanese legend of the 47 rōnin. The film is a notable genre detour in his career; the sources available here do not establish a role-specific measure of its audience reception.
16. Evan Webber — Knock Knock (2015)
Evan is a family man whose encounter with two strangers turns into a tense psychological thriller. The role asks Reeves to play vulnerability and panic rather than an assured action lead. It is best approached without spoilers: the unease comes from watching an ordinary situation spiral.
15. John Constantine — Constantine (2005)
As the chain-smoking occult investigator, Reeves brings a weary, sardonic presence to a supernatural comic-book adaptation. Constantine remains one of his recognizable genre characters, distinct from the disciplined fighters who later became a defining part of his action persona.
14. Scott Favor — My Own Private Idaho (1991)
Gus Van Sant’s drama gives Reeves an early role far removed from the conventional action lead. Scott is a wealthy young man moving through a world of street life and shifting loyalties. Rotten Tomatoes’ filmography guide identifies the film among Reeves’s dramatic showcases, making it an important stop for viewers who know him chiefly from later blockbusters.
13. Ted Logan — Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) and sequels
As Ted, Reeves helped create a comedy character defined by goofy optimism and an easygoing friendship with Alex Winter’s Bill. The original became one of Reeves’s hit comedies, and the character returned in later films. Ted’s cheerful, unpolished charm is a reminder that Reeves’s screen identity was never built on action alone.

- The Devil's Advocate: Collector's Edition [4K UHD]
12. Johnny Utah — Point Break (1991)
Reeves plays an FBI rookie who goes undercover among surfers suspected of robbing banks. The role bridges the earnest young actor of his early dramas and the action star he would become. Rotten Tomatoes includes Point Break among his notable action thrillers; the film’s enduring recognition owes much to its mix of undercover tension and extreme-sports spectacle.
11. Jonathan Harker — Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Francis Ford Coppola’s gothic adaptation casts Reeves as the solicitor caught in Dracula’s world. Harker is part of a large ensemble rather than a character designed around Reeves alone, but the film remains an unusual and memorable chapter in his early career. Its place here reflects the breadth of his filmography more than a claim that it is one of his signature roles.
10. Kevin Lomax — The Devil’s Advocate (1997)
Reeves plays an ambitious lawyer recruited by a powerful New York firm, opposite Al Pacino as its commanding head. The role puts him in a supernatural legal drama and gives him a different kind of pressure to navigate: ambition, conscience, and control. The film is memorable as a dramatic showcase, but its box office is not a measure of how popular the character itself is.
9. Shane Falco — The Replacements (2000)
Falco is a former quarterback asked to lead a hastily assembled team of substitute players. The sports comedy gives Reeves an underdog role built on second chances and team spirit, rather than a lone hero’s physical prowess. Its nostalgic appeal is plausible, but the sources used for this ranking do not measure audience nostalgia directly.
8. Jack Traven — Speed (1994)
As a Los Angeles police officer trying to keep a bus moving above a deadly speed threshold, Reeves anchors a high-concept action thriller with an unshowy, quick-thinking performance. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film at 95% on its Tomatometer, in a ranking updated October 17, 2025. Box Office Watch reports a worldwide gross of $283.2 million for the film; both figures describe the movie, not Jack Traven’s individual popularity. Rotten Tomatoes’ Keanu Reeves movie ranking and Box Office Watch’s Keanu Reeves box-office page provide those film-level measures.

7. Duke Caboom — Toy Story 4 (2019, voice)
Reeves voices Duke Caboom, a toy stunt performer whose confidence and insecurity make him an entertaining supporting character. Box Office Watch reports Toy Story 4 earned $1.07 billion worldwide. That is the reach of an ensemble animated film, not a count of viewers who came for Duke or a measure of his individual popularity.
6. Neo / Thomas Anderson — The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
In the first sequel, Reeves returns as Neo, now confronting what his role as humanity’s potential liberator means for the people and world around him. Box Office Watch reports a worldwide gross of $738.6 million for The Matrix Reloaded. That figure illustrates the sequel’s commercial reach; it does not isolate Neo’s contribution or show that this chapter is more popular than the original.

The retired assassin drawn back into violence introduced a new defining action role for Reeves. His performance combines precision, physical commitment, and a restrained grief that gives the relentless gunplay an emotional center. Rotten Tomatoes describes the film as a satisfying return to action and notes that it appeared to begin a franchise. Wick’s lasting place in Reeves’s modern screen identity is about more than the series’ scale: the character’s controlled presence and visual style became instantly recognizable.
4. John Wick — John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
The fourth film expands Wick’s journey into an international series of duels and pursuits, keeping Reeves at the center of an elaborate action production. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film at 94% on its Tomatometer in a ranking updated October 17, 2025. Box Office Watch reports a worldwide gross of $447.3 million. These are measures of the film’s critical reception and commercial reach, not proof that this chapter alone is the most popular portrayal of Wick.

Neo’s journey from office worker to a figure challenging the rules of reality is Reeves’s signature science-fiction role. His stillness and gradual shift from uncertainty to conviction suit a film built around the question of what is real. Box Office Watch reports a worldwide gross of $472.4 million for The Matrix. Its cultural stature and the distinctiveness of Reeves’s performance make Neo a leading contender for his most recognizable character, although that gross is a film-level figure rather than a role-specific popularity count.
Rank #4
2. Jack Traven — Speed (1994)
Jack earns a high placement because he distills Reeves’s early action appeal into a resourceful, grounded hero: brave without being invulnerable, and direct without losing his warmth. The film’s 95% Tomatometer score and reported $283.2 million worldwide gross offer strong critical and commercial context, but neither number is a poll of favorite Reeves characters. For many viewers, the role is the clearest bridge between his early screen presence and the action-star persona he would later refine.

1. Neo — The Matrix franchise
Neo takes the top spot for cultural longevity, franchise visibility, and how completely the role fits Reeves’s understated screen style. The character’s transformation gives him room to move from uncertainty to resolve, while the films’ science-fiction world made that arc widely recognizable. The original The Matrix and later entries have substantial film-level box-office records, but no figure here counts audience attachment to Neo specifically. This first-place ranking is an editorial judgment, not the result of a measured poll.
How to read the ranking
There is no single neutral yardstick for “popular.” A critic score describes reviewers’ assessments of a film; a worldwide gross describes reported ticket revenue; an audience-interaction measure is different again. IMDb’s data documentation distinguishes averaged user ratings from popularity meters based on audience interaction: IMDb Data’s metadata-license documentation. None of those measures, by itself, ranks individual Reeves characters. This countdown therefore gives the most weight to recognition, staying power, franchise visibility, and how distinctly each role showcases Reeves, with reviews and grosses used only as context.
Film and box-office information can change as databases update or account for re-releases. Rotten Tomatoes’ scores cited above reflect the ranking page updated October 17, 2025; Box Office Watch’s reported grosses were accessed in 2026.
