Katy Perry shared photos and video with Justin Trudeau from a Japan trip, including a cheek-to-cheek selfie and a sushi outing. News coverage described the Instagram carousel as making the pair “Instagram official,” but neither Perry nor Trudeau publicly commented on their relationship in the cited coverage. The post was a public signal, not a direct verbal confirmation.
What Perry posted from Japan
Perry’s carousel showed her and Trudeau together during a Japan trip. It included a close selfie, footage of the pair eating sushi and a museum visit. She captioned the post, “tokyo times on tour and more.” The photos’ observable content is clear; the post itself did not include a relationship announcement. The Guardian’s coverage framed the carousel as an Instagram-official moment.
What the Instagram post did—and did not—confirm
Coverage treated Perry’s post as a public relationship signal, but the distinction matters: neither Perry nor Trudeau was reported to have made a direct public statement about their relationship. Calling the post “Instagram official” describes how it was interpreted, not a quoted announcement from either person. People’s report likewise described the post’s significance while noting the absence of a public relationship comment.
Trudeau separately reshared a photo with Perry, former Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida and Kishida’s wife, Yuko. He wrote, “Great to see you @kishida230. Katy and I were so glad to have the chance to sit down with you and Yuko.” The line confirms that Perry joined the meeting; it says nothing about the nature of their relationship. Trudeau’s Instagram post is the source for that wording.

How the reported timeline developed
July 2025: Montreal dinner
The Associated Press reported that Perry and Trudeau dined at Montreal restaurant Le Violon. The restaurant’s communications consultant confirmed that they spent about two hours there and said there was no visible public display of affection during the meal. The dinner prompted speculation, but was not itself confirmation of a romance. The Associated Press account describes what the restaurant representative said.
October 2025: Paris appearance
In October, Perry and Trudeau were photographed holding hands after attending a Paris cabaret show for Perry’s 41st birthday. That appearance added to public speculation before the Japan photos. TMZ’s report covered the Paris sighting.

The Japan carousel and Trudeau’s separate Kishida-meeting post made their connection more visible on social media, while leaving the relationship’s status without an explicit statement from either person in the cited coverage.

Trudeau served as Canada’s prime minister from 2015 to 2025 and announced his resignation in 2025. That political role helps explain the attention around his public appearance with Perry, but it does not change what the posts say—or establish a relationship announcement. BBC News’ account of his resignation provides the political context.
