Katy Perry, Gayle King and four other women safely returned to Earth on April 14, 2025, after completing Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission. The six-person crew launched from Blue Origin’s Launch Site One in West Texas, crossed above the atmosphere on a brief commercial suborbital flight, experienced a short period of weightlessness and returned to Earth the same day.
NS-31 was Blue Origin’s 11th human flight using its New Shepard system. It was also widely described as the first spaceflight with an all-female passenger crew since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo Vostok 6 mission in 1963. That comparison needs a careful qualification: the 2025 distinction refers to the passenger crew, rather than necessarily to every possible definition of an all-woman space mission.
Who was on Blue Origin’s NS-31 flight?
The crew consisted of:
- Katy Perry, global pop performer
- Gayle King, journalist and television host
- Aisha Bowe, former NASA rocket scientist and entrepreneur
- Amanda Nguyễn, research scientist and civil-rights advocate
- Kerianne Flynn, film producer
- Lauren Sánchez, journalist, pilot and philanthropist, who assembled the group
Blue Origin announced the crew on February 27, 2025. The passengers represented very different professional backgrounds, making the mission notable not only for its all-female passenger lineup but also for the range of public, scientific, creative and philanthropic work represented aboard the capsule.

What happened during the flight?
The launch window opened at 8:30 a.m. Central Daylight Time—13:30 UTC—on April 14. New Shepard carried the crew capsule and its passengers on a short, vertical suborbital flight from West Texas. After the vehicle reached the upper atmosphere and the passengers experienced microgravity, the capsule separated for its return to Earth while the reusable booster landed separately.
That distinction matters. NS-31 was not an orbital mission: the crew did not enter orbit around Earth and did not spend days in space. New Shepard is designed for brief commercial spaceflights that provide a few minutes of weightlessness before the capsule descends and lands back on Earth.
Blue Origin reported that the mission was successfully completed, and contemporaneous coverage reported that the capsule returned without incident. “Safely returned” is therefore an accurate description of the outcome, while the more precise description is a completed commercial suborbital spaceflight.

Why the all-female crew was historically significant
NS-31 attracted global attention because all six passengers were women. The most commonly cited historical comparison is Tereshkova’s Vostok 6 flight in June 1963. Tereshkova flew alone, so NS-31 was not a repeat of that mission; rather, it was widely characterized as the first spaceflight with an all-female passenger crew since that 1963 flight.

The wording is important because “all-female spaceflight” can mean different things depending on whether a report is counting passengers, professional astronauts, the entire flight crew or the broader mission team. NS-31’s clearest and most defensible distinction is its six-person, all-female passenger crew.

Related space merchandise and reading
Blue Origin’s official shop listed an NS-31 mission patch with heat-press backing, but the listing was marked sold out at the time of research. Availability and pricing may change, so the patch should not be described as currently available without a fresh check.
For families looking for a related, space-themed product rather than official mission merchandise, The Fly Who Flew to Space is a hardcover children’s picture book by Lauren Sánchez Bezos, the NS-31 crew organizer. The publisher describes it as the story of a fly who dreams of becoming an astronaut and highlights its glow-in-the-dark features. It is best understood as an adjacent inspirational space book—not as an official Katy Perry, Gayle King or NS-31 product—and readers should verify current stock and pricing before buying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What NS-31 did—and did not—represent
- It was a private commercial flight: Blue Origin operated the New Shepard mission; it was not a NASA mission.
- It was suborbital: the passengers briefly experienced microgravity but did not enter Earth orbit.
- It was completed on April 14, 2025: the event is no longer upcoming.
- It carried six female passengers: Perry and King were two members of a larger crew that also included Bowe, Nguyễn, Flynn and Sánchez.
- “Astronaut” requires context: Blue Origin uses the term for its passenger flyers, while public and professional usage of commercial-spaceflight titles can vary. It should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a NASA career designation.
In short, Katy Perry and Gayle King did return safely from space—but in the specific sense of completing a brief suborbital journey above the atmosphere. The larger achievement of NS-31 was a successful commercial flight carrying six women, whose return on April 14, 2025 created a notable milestone in the modern era of private human spaceflight.
