It was a short suborbital flight—not an orbital mission—but it became notable as the first all-female crewed spaceflight since Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission in 1963.
What happened on Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission?
Blue Origin launched its New Shepard spacecraft from Launch Site One in West Texas. The vehicle crossed the Kármán line, the boundary commonly set at 62 miles (100 kilometers) above Earth, giving the crew several minutes of weightlessness before the capsule descended under parachutes.
The flight lasted about 11 minutes, with roughly four minutes spent in weightlessness. New Shepard does not place its passengers into orbit. It flies up and over the edge of space on a suborbital trajectory before returning to Earth.

Who was on the all-female crew?
Lauren Sánchez helped assemble the six-person crew. The passengers were:
- Katy Perry, singer and philanthropist
- Gayle King, journalist and co-host of CBS Mornings
- Lauren Sánchez, journalist, pilot and philanthropist
- Aisha Bowe, former NASA rocket scientist and STEM entrepreneur
- Amanda Nguyễn, bioastronautics researcher and civil-rights activist
- Kerianne Flynn, film producer and community builder
NS-31 was the first crewed spaceflight made up entirely of women since Tereshkova flew alone in 1963. That distinction needs some care: women had traveled to space many times before NS-31, and Tereshkova’s historic flight was a solo mission rather than a multiperson crew.
Why did Gayle King go to space?
King said spaceflight had never been a lifelong ambition. She accepted the invitation because it offered a challenge she had never faced and because she wanted to be part of the significance of an all-female team.
At 70, she also viewed the flight as a way to challenge assumptions about age and new experiences. Before making the decision, King spoke with her children and Oprah Winfrey. She acknowledged being both excited and frightened, while particularly anticipating the sensation of floating in microgravity.
Why did Katy Perry go?
Perry described the flight as an opportunity to gain a different perspective on Earth and the responsibility to protect it. Blue Origin said she also hoped the mission would encourage her daughter and other young people to “reach for the stars.”
During the flight, Perry sang “What a Wonderful World”. She chose not to perform one of her own songs, saying the piece suited the crew’s shared experience and their appreciation of Earth.

Why the wording about the launch date matters
Announcements before the flight described Perry and King as heading to space “on Monday.” That wording referred specifically to April 14, 2025. It should not be read as an upcoming launch date.
It is also more precise to describe NS-31 as a brief suborbital trip to space. Crossing the Kármán line supports the description, but the New Shepard capsule did not remain in orbit around Earth. The crew experienced a few minutes of weightlessness before returning by parachute.

Was NS-31 the first all-female spaceflight?
