Her official birth date was 17 May 1930, making her 94 by completed years; contemporary reports described her as 95 because she was in her 95th year.
Who was Kumudini Lakhia?
Lakhia was an Indian Kathak dancer, choreographer and teacher whose career spanned more than 75 years, according to her 2025 Padma Vibhushan biography. She performed in more than 50 countries. Separately, the biography says the performing company of Kadamb, the Ahmedabad dance centre she founded, toured more than 40 countries.
How did she change Kathak performance?
Lakhia’s artistic path moved from performing to shaping how Kathak was presented on stage. She toured internationally with dancer Ram Gopal, who offered her a role as his partner when she was 17. She later received a Government of India scholarship to study with Kathak guru Shambhu Maharaj at Sri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in New Delhi.
In 1964, she founded Kadamb Dance Centre in Ahmedabad and developed its Kathak technique, vocabulary and repertoire. She began focusing on choreography and dance design in 1973. Rather than abandoning Kathak’s technique, she sought new ways to stage it, helping bring group performances and contemporary interpretation into a form often associated with solo renditions.

At a 2001 Natyakala conference, Lakhia explained that she remained deeply committed to Kathak’s technique but wanted its presentation to have greater dignity and finesse. She envisioned a stage filled with dancers, patterns of colour and music with its own musicality, as reported by The Indian Express, which attributed the remarks to Narthaki.
What work is she best known for?
Alongside her work at Kadamb and her influence on Kathak stagecraft, Lakhia choreographed the 1981 Hindi film Umrao Jaan. Her work connected classical dance practice with a wider cinematic audience while remaining rooted in the form.
