Kate Upton returned to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover in 2024 for the franchise’s 60th anniversary issue. It was her fourth cover, following her first appearance in the issue in 2011 and her first cover in 2012. SI says Yu Tsai photographed her in Mexico, where she wore a pink-and-red Normaillot two-piece for the cover.
Why Upton’s 2024 cover was a milestone
The anniversary issue marked a return to the cover at 31, after Upton first appeared in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit at 19. SI’s cover-model feature identifies it as her fourth cover. The publication’s editor in chief, MJ Day, described Upton’s first cover in 2012 as “a catalyst for the evolution of the brand.” That is SI’s account of the cover’s influence, not an independent measurement of changes across the modeling industry.
SI’s 2024 announcement named four individual cover models: Chrissy Teigen, Gayle King, Hunter McGrady, and Upton. The anniversary edition had seven covers overall and celebrated 52 women, according to the publisher. The four named individual cover models were therefore part of a larger issue, not the complete cover lineup.
What Upton said about returning in her 30s
In a May 14, 2024 SI Swimsuit interview, Upton reflected on the expectations she encountered when she began modeling and on looking after her mental health. She said it felt special to be a cover model at 19 and again at 31, especially given the idea that a modeling career is “over at 23.” She added that taking care of herself and her mental health was what she was most proud of, calling the demands of starting young “a lot to take on.”

Upton also spoke about body image as something that can have highs and lows. She hoped readers would appreciate their own uniqueness and give themselves a break, rather than tearing themselves down when they do not feel their best. Her message was to listen to one’s body, work toward feeling better, and accept personal differences. These are her reflections in the interview; they do not establish a measured effect of the issue on readers’ body image.
The SI feature describes criticism of Upton’s body type after her first cover and says the brand began reconsidering who appeared on the cover and what story an issue should tell. That account belongs to the publication and Upton’s recollection; it should not be read as a comprehensive study of industry-wide change.
Who photographed the cover, and what did she wear?
SI credits Yu Tsai with photographing Upton in Mexico and Normaillot with the pink-and-red two-piece worn for the cover. The Mexico photo gallery includes credits for other looks and labels, among them Moncler, Eres, Versace, Fleur du Mal, Agent Provocateur, and Tropic of C. Those are credits for the wider shoot; they do not identify the cover swimsuit.
