Catherine, Princess of Wales, joined Prince William for the ceremonial welcome marking the start of the Amir of Qatar’s state visit to the United Kingdom on 3 December 2024. The appearance was described as “rare” by Us Weekly; that wording is the outlet’s characterization, not a verified count of the couple’s joint appearances.
Which outing did Catherine attend with Prince William?
Their appearance was part of the official welcome for the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The Royal Family had announced that the state visit, held at the King’s invitation, would take place from 3 to 4 December 2024.
According to the Royal Family’s official account, the King met the Amir at Horse Guards Parade. The visiting party inspected a Guard of Honour before travelling to Buckingham Palace in a carriage procession. The official account identifies the King and Queen as hosts; Us Weekly reports that Catherine joined Prince William and King Charles III for the welcome.
Why was the appearance called “rare”?
Us Weekly used “rare” while describing Catherine’s reduced public schedule following her cancer diagnosis and announcement that she was undergoing chemotherapy. The available reporting does not establish a complete count of joint appearances by Catherine and William, so “rare” should be understood as the publication’s description rather than a measured comparison.

The sources also do not establish a definitive reason Catherine attended this event or show that it was a formal return-to-duty milestone. Her participation is documented; private motives should not be inferred from it.
What did Catherine wear?
Us Weekly described Catherine’s outfit as maroon and noted pearl accessories. The report does not identify a designer, specific garment, or jewelry brand, so those details cannot be confirmed from the available coverage.

What followed the ceremonial welcome?
The Royal Family’s account says the afternoon programme included a private lunch and a special exhibition in the Picture Gallery, featuring Royal Collection items related to Qatar. That evening, the King and Queen hosted a state banquet attended by other members of the Royal Family.
In his banquet speech, King Charles III described the relationship between the countries: “The United Kingdom is proud to be Qatar’s oldest friend in the Western world. We have a special bond founded on mutual respect which has stood the test of time.” The remark addressed UK–Qatar ties, rather than Catherine and William’s appearance.

The official account says such visits to the UK generally take place twice a year; that is general context, not a count of the Waleses’ joint outings.
