What was the royal wedding cake made of and how was it decorated?
The main cake was a traditional fruit cake. Its decoration used cream and white icing in the Joseph Lambeth technique, an English overpiping style built from detailed piped work, including scrolls and garlands. A central garland echoed architectural garlands in the Picture Gallery where the cake was displayed, according to the Royal Household’s 2018 retrospective.
Flowers, lace and symbolic details
The 2011 reception announcement describes “up to 900” individually iced flowers and leaves in 17 varieties. The 2018 retrospective instead reports that Cairns’s team created 900 sugar-paste flowers. These are the sources’ distinct descriptions, rather than a single consistently phrased count.

The retrospective says a team of 50 chefs spent five weeks constructing the sugar-paste flowers. It also identifies 17 additional flowers with special meaning, including sweet William and myrtle; the Royal Household says myrtle symbolizes love and marriage. Lace from Catherine’s dress was copied onto the cake, although Cairns did not know at the time that the lace came from the dress.
What was the chocolate biscuit cake at William and Kate’s wedding?
It was a separate cake served at the reception, made by McVitie’s Cake Company using a Royal Family recipe at Prince William’s special request. The official announcements identify its maker and recipe source but do not give its dimensions or detailed recipe. The two cakes were therefore distinct: Cairns’s traditional fruit cake was the tiered, decorated wedding centerpiece, while McVitie’s made the chocolate biscuit cake.

Is the exact wedding cake recipe available?
The Royal Household’s cited pages document the fruit cake’s type, assembly and decoration, but do not provide a complete recipe or ingredient proportions. They likewise do not give a detailed recipe for the chocolate biscuit cake. A recipe published elsewhere should not be treated as the exact original unless it is independently verified against a reliable source.
