What happened on 5 May 2025?
The royal party watched the procession alongside veterans from the Royal British Legion before appearing on the Buckingham Palace balcony. The RAF Red Arrows flew over the Palace after the procession. Later, King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted a tea party for veterans and members of the Second World War generation.
The procession travelled from Parliament Square along Whitehall and The Mall to the Queen Victoria Memorial. The government’s published arrangements for 5 May listed a 12:10 departure and a 13:45 flypast; public viewing areas were free, with large crowds expected. These were arrangements for that date, not current travel guidance. GOV.UK’s event guide set out the route and schedule.
The House of Commons Library reported that more than 1,300 people—including Armed Forces members, uniformed services and young people—took part in the procession. The flypast featured 23 current and historic military aircraft. About 50 veterans, family members and others from the wartime generation attended the Palace tea party, according to the Library’s 2025 briefing. The briefing distinguishes these event figures from the broader history of VE Day and VJ Day.

A veteran at the start of the procession
The Associated Press reported that the procession began after 100-year-old RAF veteran Alan Kennett accepted the salute. AP also reported that Catherine spoke with Bernard Morgan, a 101-year-old veteran who had worked as a wartime code breaker, and introduced him to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The Associated Press account reported those encounters.
How the commemorations continued through 8 May
The anniversary programme extended beyond the procession and balcony appearance. On 6 May, Queen Camilla viewed a display of nearly 30,000 ceramic poppies at the Tower of London. The flowers came from the 2014 installation “Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red,” according to the Royal Family’s account.

On 8 May, royals attended a Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey. The observance included a national two-minute silence and wreath-laying at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior. That evening, the King, Queen and other royals attended a live BBC concert at Horse Guards Parade.
At the concert, King Charles said: “In remembering the past, we must also look to the future. As the number of those who lived through the Second World War so sadly dwindles, the more it becomes our duty to carry their stories forward, to ensure their experiences are never to be forgotten. We must listen, learn and share.” The Royal Family published the remarks in its account of the anniversary programme. Why the 1945 balcony appearance is part of the story
On 8 May 1945, George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony as people gathered to celebrate victory in Europe. The Royal Collection Trust says police estimated nearly 100,000 people in the immediate vicinity of the Palace. That is a historical estimate for 1945, not an attendance figure for the 2025 events; the available accounts do not provide a directly comparable 2025 crowd total.
The 1945 appearance was also filmed by television cameras mounted on vans, according to the Trust. Recalling VE Day in 1985, Queen Elizabeth II said, “I think it was one of the most memorable nights of my life.” The Trust records her recollection in its historical account. What VE Day commemorates
VE Day marks the Allied victory in Europe on 8 May 1945. It is distinct from VJ Day, commemorated on 15 August, which marks the end of the war in the Far East. The House of Commons Library’s 2025 briefing explains the difference and the anniversaries’ commemorative programmes.
The 2025 royal appearance linked a familiar Palace balcony tradition with a programme centered on veterans, public remembrance and the stories of those who lived through the war. The 1945 crowd estimate offers historical context, but it should not be treated as a measure of the 2025 turnout.
