What is the documentary about?
The film follows Kate Wright, now publicly known as Kate Ferdinand, as she becomes a step-parent to Rio’s three children, Lorenz, Tate and Tia. Its account of family life is set against the children’s grief after the death of their mother, Rebecca, and the family’s later bereavement following the death of Rio’s mother, Janet.

According to the production company’s documentary synopsis, Kate and Rio meet step-parents at a support group led by psychologist Lisa Doodson. They also visit Child Bereavement UK to hear from children who have lost a parent. The synopsis says what they learn prompts changes in how they approach family life. The film presents the couple’s personal experience; their reflections should not be treated as clinical guidance for every family.
When was Rio and Kate: Becoming a Stepfamily released?
The documentary was announced in January 2020 as a BBC One film about forming a step-family and the months leading up to Kate and Rio’s wedding. The production company lists it as a 2020 release, with BBC as broadcaster. Its listed duration is 59 minutes there, while another listing gives 58 minutes, so it is best described as about an hour.

What did Kate and Rio say about filming?
In an ITV This Morning interview ahead of the broadcast, Rio said that talking with others in similar situations had helped the couple and that communication was important in working through problems. He described people sometimes feeling vulnerable about these experiences.
Kate said she had been nervous about letting the public into a private part of their lives, but was glad they made the film. Her comments describe how filming felt for her, not a promise that sharing personal experiences is right for every family.

What might the documentary offer viewers facing similar circumstances?
The film follows one family’s experience rather than presenting a universal guide to step-parenting or bereavement. Its support-group visit and conversation with children affected by parental loss show how Kate and Rio sought perspectives beyond their own household. In the ITV interview, both described the process as emotionally demanding; Rio also spoke about the value they found in communication and meeting people in similar situations.
