In her review for Scroll, published 17 May 2024, Nandini Ramnath finds Kartam Bhugtam a drag: its mystery takes too long to unfold, its 131-minute runtime feels hard to justify, and its explanations do not make the story more convincing. She gives credit to Shreyas Talpade and Vijay Raaz, whose performances, in her view, remain engaged.
What is Kartam Bhugtam about?
Kartam Bhugtam is a psychological thriller written and directed by Soham P. Shah. Dev, played by Shreyas Talpade, returns from New Zealand to Bhopal to settle family affairs and access an inheritance delayed by banking red tape. A friend introduces him to Anna, an astrologer played by Vijay Raaz, whose predictions capture Dev’s attention. Aksha Pardasany plays Dev’s wife, Jia, and Madhoo plays Anna’s wife, Seema.
The film’s official trailer description calls it a pan-India theatrical release, in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam, on 17 May 2024. It credits Gandhar Films & Studio Pvt. Ltd. as producer and Zee Music Company as music publisher. The trailer’s tagline, “What goes around, comes around,” signals the story’s interest in consequences without explaining its mystery.
Why does Ramnath call the thriller a drag?
The mystery takes time to get moving
Ramnath’s central criticism is about execution rather than the basic premise. She argues that the story is simple enough to move faster, but Shah takes too long to establish its central situation. The film, in her reading, repeats points that are already clear and accumulates implausibilities as Dev becomes more involved with Anna and Seema while neglecting Jia.

The psychological turn works better than the investigation
Ramnath finds Dev’s psychological decline more believable than his effort to uncover the truth. That distinction matters: the film’s tension may register as a portrait of a man losing his footing, but the mystery’s chain of events does not persuade her. The later explanations, she says, spell out too much without making the ideas land.
The length magnifies the thinness
BookMyShow lists the runtime as 2 hours 11 minutes; Ramnath gives it as 131 minutes, the same duration expressed in minutes. She calls the production threadbare and says its staging resembles a TV movie, a combination that makes the length feel especially difficult to justify. Her assessment is captured in her line: “The threadbare production, which is staged like a TV movie, barely justifies the 131-minute duration.”

How are the performances?
Ramnath’s clearest praise is for Talpade and Raaz. She considers them the performers who seem engaged with the material, even as she criticizes the story’s pacing and persuasiveness. Talpade carries the shift from Dev’s practical family business to his destabilized state; Raaz gives Anna a central presence in the film’s uncertainty. The review does not treat strong performances as enough to overcome its structural problems.
Is Kartam Bhugtam worth watching?
For viewers who want a tightly paced, convincing mystery, Ramnath’s review points to reasons for caution: a slow start, implausibilities, an overlong middle, and explanatory late turns that fail to clarify the film’s ideas. Viewers more interested in Talpade and Raaz, or in a thriller centered on psychological unraveling, may find those performances worth seeking out. That is a reading of one critic’s review, not a claim about audience consensus.
