Karmachakra Review: Can It Be the First Indian Anime?

Karmachakra pairs a Bengali mystery about an orphan seeking her roots with anime-style animation. Whether it is the first Indian anime depends on the definition—and the feature’s current release status remains unclear.

Karmachakra is best described as an independent Indian production made in an anime style—not as an uncontested first in a settled category. The Bengali mystery-drama follows an orphan girl searching for her roots, and its pilot introduces a distinctly Indian story through animation inspired by Japanese manga. The “first Indian anime” label depends on what counts as anime and how narrowly “made in India” is defined.

What is Karmachakra about?

Karmachakra is a mystery-drama set in fictional present-day India. It follows Ganga, an orphan trying to uncover her roots. In the pilot’s setup, a message from a friend’s phone draws her into the mystery of his death. The story brings together Hindu mythology, psychology and cybertechnology, according to VICE’s 2020 account.

Studio Durga says the project was conceived in 2016 and that its creation led to the studio’s formation in 2017. It describes Karmachakra as an original story set in India, animated in an anime style. The studio’s official description defines its approach as 2D hand-drawn animation in the style of Japanese manga, made independently of foreign collaboration.

What can viewers watch?

Studio Durga’s Karmachakra project page links the official trailer, a complete pilot episode, and opening and closing song content. The page still describes the movie as upcoming. That wording does not establish the feature’s current release status, and the available information does not identify a current streaming or distribution platform.

VICE reported in 2020 that a 25-minute pilot had been uploaded to YouTube in February of that year. Its description said the pilot comprised the film’s first 20 minutes plus opening and closing songs. A pilot is not the completed feature, and that dated report cannot confirm whether the full film has since been released.

The project page also lists the original Arc 1 voice cast: Swastika Mukherjee as Ganga, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty as Dr. Roy, Parno Mittra as Meghna, Mir Afsar Ali as Arka, Santu Mukherjee as Prof. Siddharth, Anik Dutta as Ghoshal, Tanusree Shankar as Sushmita, Swaroopa Ghosh as Madhavi, Alaknanda Roy as Mrs. Roy, Barun Chanda as Father Gomes, Shantilal Mukherjee as Gautam, and Shamik Sinha as Ronnie.

Does the pilot make a convincing case for the project?

The premise gives the pilot a clear mystery to build around: a young woman’s search for her origins intersects with the death of someone close to her. Its combination of mythology, psychology and technology offers room for a story rooted in Indian references rather than simply borrowing Japanese settings or characters. The pilot’s limited scope, however, means it can introduce the central hook without resolving how fully those elements come together across a feature.

The production’s creative identity rests on a deliberate pairing: Bengali dialogue and an Indian setting alongside an animation language associated with Japanese anime. In a 2020 interview with The Times of India, director Rajorshi Basu said Bengali was chosen in part because it was his mother tongue and because he felt its phonetics suited anime’s limited mouth shapes. That is Basu’s artistic rationale, not an established linguistic rule. VICE reported that Hindi dubbing and English subtitles were planned at the time; their present availability is not confirmed.

Studio Durga reports that the pilot won the Platinum Award for Best Animation Short at the Independent Shorts Awards in Los Angeles in 2020, along with honourable mentions for Best Webseries/TV Pilot and Best Original Score. Those recognitions establish that the short received awards; they do not settle the feature’s release status or determine whether “anime” is the right label.

Is Karmachakra the first Indian anime?

There is no single uncontested answer because “anime” can refer to an animation style or to animation produced in Japan. Studio Durga uses the style-based meaning and says it was India’s first animation studio creating anime independently of foreign collaboration. VICE called Karmachakra the first entirely made-in-India anime while noting that some people dispute whether work made outside Japan should be called anime. The Times of India used the more cautious description “arguably the first homegrown anime movie in India” and distinguished it from earlier India–Japan collaborations, whose anime art was made in Japan.

So the defensible claim is narrower: Karmachakra is an independent Indian production made in an anime style, and one of the projects that brought the “Indian anime” question into public discussion. Calling it the first is reasonable only with a stated criterion, such as an anime-style production made independently in India without foreign studio collaboration. It is not a universally accepted historical record.

What production details are known?

In 2019, AnimationXpress reported that the planned feature was 80 minutes long and 50 percent complete at that time. Those were plans and a progress estimate published during production, not a verified final runtime or current completion figure. The same trade report described the film as a mystery drama about an orphan tracing her past and present.
