Reviews praise Suriya’s commanding lead performance and the film’s elaborate visual world, but find its two timelines, character work and emotional story less coherent than its spectacle. Its forceful sound design is another major talking point—and a reason to be cautious if you are sensitive to very loud mixes.
What is Kanguva about?
Directed by Siva, Kanguva moves between Francis, a bounty hunter in present-day Goa, and Kanguva, a warrior in a storyline set around 1070. A mysterious boy connects the strands. Reviewers describe the bond between the warrior and a child who is not his own as the story’s emotional centre, while the film also draws on reincarnation and a link spanning roughly a thousand years.
Rotten Tomatoes lists the film as a Tamil-language fantasy/action release that opened theatrically on November 14, 2024, with a runtime of 2 hours 34 minutes. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing is the source for those details.
What works: Suriya and the period spectacle
Suriya’s energetic performance is one of the film’s most consistent strengths in the cited reviews. The period sections give him a forceful role suited to the movie’s grand ambitions. Hindustan Times also praises the technical craft, while reviews point to the elaborate costumes, cinematography, art direction and visual scale.
#1 Best Overall
- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
The production often makes its strongest impression as spectacle: a richly built world, emphatic action and a lead performance pushing hard against the frame. The Hollywood Reporter India’s review summary, however, notes that lavish production values are not matched by equally developed characters or writing. Where the story loses momentum
The central challenge is making the present-day bounty-hunter plot and the ancient warrior story feel like parts of one film. Hindustan Times says the action, drama and emotion do not blend smoothly; The Hollywood Reporter India also identifies the difficulty of balancing timelines and genres. Scroll finds the present-day material tedious and argues that visceral action can overwhelm the emotional thread.

- 360° SurroundX Audio: SurroundX technology combines two rear surround speakers and dual up-firing Atmos drivers to build a true 360° sound field. Powered by intelligent spatial algorithms, the system precisely positions audio around and above you—enhancing Dolby Atmos with a more natural, three-dimensional soundstage. Note: Not compatible with DTS.
- Lossless Audio Transmission: Unlock full Dolby Atmos performance with HDMI eARC, supporting up to 37Mbps bandwidth for lossless 5.1.2-channel audio. Compared to regular ARC, eARC delivers richer detail and better surround effects with no compression. Enjoy seamless OTA updates that unlock new features and keep your system performing at its peak.
Hindustan Times further criticizes repeated moments designed to elevate the hero, as well as underdeveloped supporting characters. The result, across these assessments, is a film whose scale and ambition are easier to admire than its narrative cohesion. Read Hindustan Times’ review.
Why the sound mix became part of the review
The loudness is more than a passing complaint in the critical response. Scroll reviewer Nandini Ramnath wrote, “Much of the 154-minute movie is one long roar, a lot of noise signifying nothing.” The line is a critic’s judgment, not a measurement of sound levels or a medical warning. Scroll also used the phrase “might permanently affect the tympanic membrane” as hyperbole about the force of the effects and score—not as a medical finding. Read Scroll’s review.

In a report updated November 15, 2024, Hindustan Times said producer K.E. Gnanavel Raja told exhibitors to lower the volume by two points after feedback. That is a report of the producer’s statement; it does not establish a measured sound level or confirm that every theatre made the change. Read the Hindustan Times report.
Who is likely to enjoy Kanguva?
The film is a better fit for viewers drawn to heightened action, expansive period design and Suriya’s high-energy screen presence than for those seeking a tightly integrated story or finely developed supporting cast. The shift between timelines and genres is central to its design, but reviewers disagree with the film’s success in making those elements cohere.
