Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000) is a Tamil musical that recasts Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility in a South Indian setting. Its two sisters are pulled between romance, money, and the loss of a family home, and A. R. Rahman’s score carries much of the emotional weight. Twenty-five years on, it works as a romance, a family drama, and a clear example of how a classic novel can travel into another culture and still hold together.

A Tamil adaptation, not a costume drama
The BFI describes the film in one sentence: “A Tamil musical adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, with A. R. Rahman composing.” That relationship matters because the film does not simply borrow Austen’s plot and dress it up. A JASNA-hosted review summarises it as an adaptation with Indian characters and settings, and it draws parallels between the film’s sisters and the Dashwood family. That review is a secondary critical source, so its reading of the film is one informed view rather than a settled verdict.

What carries over from Austen
- Sisters with clearly different temperaments, placed at the centre of the story.
- A family whose fortunes change sharply, forcing practical decisions about where they live and how they earn.
- Romantic disappointments that the sisters have to absorb and work through.
- A resolution in which the sisters’ relationships are settled, as the JASNA-hosted review describes it.
What changes in translation
- Setting. The story moves into an Indian world, and its family and social details are rendered in that context.
- Tone. The JASNA-hosted review notes that the musical set pieces make the adaptation tonally distinct from a straight literary transposition.
- Ambition. The sisters’ romantic choices are tied to work, ambition, and self-reliance, which turns courtship into a practical question as well as an emotional one.
Story and characters
The platform synopsis on Google Play frames the film around two sisters, Tabu as the elder and Aishwarya Rai as the younger, whose ambitions and choices of partners drive the plot. The details below follow that synopsis.
The elder sister
The elder sister’s romance is with an aspiring film director, so her arc runs through ambition in a creative field rather than settled domestic life.

The younger sister
The younger sister is drawn to a businessman, and she is also admired by a wounded commando captain. Her romantic options therefore sit between two very different ideas of a secure future.
The loss of the family home
The family loses its home after the grandfather dies. That single event turns romantic choice into a question of security, work, and independence, which is why the film reads as more than a courtship story.
The music
The BFI says Rahman’s songs draw from Carnatic music, folk, and jazz. That mix is the film’s most distinctive sonic feature, and it gives the musical numbers a range that a single tradition could not supply.
Carnatic, folk, and jazz in one score
Carnatic music anchors the film in a classical South Indian idiom, folk music brings it closer to everyday regional life, and jazz adds a more cosmopolitan colour. The BFI presents these as the score’s sources; it does not provide a track-by-track breakdown.
A song built on a Bharati poem
The BFI notes that one song is based on a romantic poem by Subramania Bharati, the freedom fighter and poet. Bharati’s presence gives the film a literary and nationalist reference point inside its love story.
The title song at Eilean Donan Castle
According to the BFI, the energetic title song was filmed at Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland. That location is an unusual choice for a Tamil film of this period, and it gives the song a visual scale that the rest of the film does not attempt. The BFI’s own description calls the film “wonderful” and “eye-popping”; those are the institution’s judgments, not measurable findings.
Casting and the anniversary
Cinema Express published a report on 9 May 2026 noting that the film had recently celebrated its 25-year release anniversary. Counting from the 2000 release, the 25th anniversary falls in 2025, so the exact year reflects the report’s framing rather than an independently verified release-day date.
The same report recounts how Rajiv Menon cast the role of Meenakshi. He first approached Manju Warrier, and he had already secured Tabu. He then approached Aishwarya Rai on the suggestion of his wife, Latha. According to Menon’s account, Rai responded emotionally to his narration and agreed to the role even after he warned her that her fee might be beyond the production’s budget.

In Menon’s recollection, as reported by Cinema Express, Rai’s answer was: “Whatever you do, I will act in it.”

Reading the film alongside the novel
If you read the film against Austen’s novel, four axes give the comparison structure:
- Setting and period. Compare how the film builds its world and whether the social pressures on the family feel equivalent.
- The sisters. Compare how each sister’s temperament and choices are presented, and whether the film’s version keeps the contrast the novel depends on.
- Inheritance and romance. Compare how the loss of the family home drives the romantic plot in each version.
- Music. Compare the role of song in the film with the novel’s narrative voice, which has no equivalent.
Any judgment on these axes is editorial interpretation or a reviewer’s view, not a finding from measurement.

Verdict
Kandukondain Kandukondain is worth watching as an adaptation and as a film in its own right. Its strongest asset is that it keeps the moral and emotional logic of Austen’s sisters while giving them a setting, a soundtrack, and a set of romantic choices that feel specific to its own time and place. It may not suit viewers who want a faithful, quiet literary transposition, but it rewards anyone who enjoys a musical that takes its emotional stakes seriously.
