When and where did the walkout happen?
The entrance took place Monday, July 22, 2024, at Harris’s campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. Biden had announced his withdrawal from the presidential race and endorsed Harris the day before. The headquarters appearance was her first public appearance as a presidential candidate, according to Georgia Public Broadcasting and the Philadelphia Inquirer (The Philadelphia Inquirer).
Why was “Freedom” part of the moment?
The song’s title and themes aligned with the campaign’s message about freedom. In her remarks to staff, Harris framed the election as a choice: “In this election, we know we each face a question: What kind of country do we want to live in?” She continued, “A country of freedom, compassion and rule of law, or a country of chaos, fear and hate?” Georgia Public Broadcasting reproduced the remarks in its report.

The Philadelphia Inquirer also reported that the campaign’s first ad used “Freedom” and that Beyoncé’s representatives had approved the campaign’s use of the track. The reports establish approval, but do not provide the underlying license terms, payment details, or other conditions.

The July reports describe Harris entering to the song; they do not establish that Beyoncé attended or performed. The singer’s presence belongs to a different event: a Houston rally on October 25, 2024, where she spoke in support of Harris but did not perform. The Associated Press covered that rally on October 26 (Associated Press).
That distinction matters: the July moment was a campaign walk-in accompanied by a recorded song, while October was an in-person endorsement speech. PolitiFact later found no evidence for a claim that Beyoncé was paid $10 million to speak at the Houston rally; that fact-check concerns the October event and does not establish the terms of the July song use (PolitiFact).
