Kamala Harris attended the Met Gala for the first time on May 5, 2025, arriving with her husband, Doug Emhoff. She wore a custom black-and-white Off-White look designed by the label’s creative director, IB Kamara. Harris made an appearance at the gala but skipped the public red-carpet arrival, according to CBS News.

Harris’s custom Off-White outfit was made from heavy black-and-white cady silks. Its details included a long scarf, one sweeping statement sleeve and a pleated skirt. Vogue reported that the fabric choice gave the garment “a deep, luxurious texture.” Harris carried a Roger Vivier clutch.
Kamara described the design to Vogue as an exercise in simplicity for a night celebrating Black culture and iconicity. He said the team used mixed silk fabrications and precise tailoring, with subtle flourishes—the dramatic sleeve and elongated scarf—to let Harris’s own dandyism stand out.
Why the gala’s theme mattered
The 2025 Met Gala took place on Monday, May 5. Its dress code was “Tailored for You,” alongside the Costume Institute exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which examined Black dandyism and Black style. British Vogue reported that the exhibition drew inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.

Harris told Vogue that art affects culture as well as policy and politics. She said artistic expression—from dance and music to visual art and fashion—can capture the mood and language of people without words, and shape discussion about the present and the future.
What Harris and Kamara said about the look
Kamara framed dandyism as an expression of confidence and strength, qualities he said Harris exemplified. He called the occasion important for him and the Off-White community. His comments and Harris’s remarks were published in Vogue’s May 5, 2025, account of the appearance.

The Associated Press reported in 2025 that the gala raised a record $31 million before it began. That was an event-wide fundraising figure, not an amount connected specifically to Harris.
