Kamala Harris and Donald Trump faced off in a Family Feud-style contest in the cold open for Saturday Night Live’s October 12, 2024 episode. Maya Rudolph played Harris, James Austin Johnson played Trump, and Kenan Thompson hosted as Steve Harvey. It was a scripted political parody—not a real debate or an episode of Family Feud.
What happens in the sketch?
The segment uses the familiar game-show setup to bring election-season figures together on opposing teams. The official SNL upload calls it the “Family Feud Election 2024 Cold Open” and describes Steve Harvey welcoming people from the Harris and Trump camps to compete. Watch the official SNL upload.

The format lets the sketch poke fun at public appearances and campaign-season talking points. Fox News coverage highlighted jokes aimed at Harris’s interview responses and her account of growing up in a middle-class family; these are satirical targets, not evidence about the truth of any claim made in the sketch.
