Madhavi Menon’s central point is that kama and yoga are not simply opposites: desire and yogic discipline have intersected across Indian traditions, even when later accounts separate them. In her 2018 excerpt from Infinite Variety: A History of Desire in India, she calls them “conjoined twins that have been separated in order for each to survive.” That is a framing of a complex history, not a claim that every yoga tradition treats desire in the same way.
What Menon means by kama and yoga
Menon uses kama for desire and the cultivation of bodily pleasure, as represented in part by the Kamasutra. Yoga, in her broad account, includes practices that shape, restrain, reject, or redirect bodily desire. These categories overlap in history, but the excerpt distinguishes them to make their different aims easier to see.
Her clearest contrast is between the Kamasutra’s attention to bodily excitation and pleasure and Patanjali’s yoga, which Menon presents as a practice of reflexive self-restraint aimed at freeing and stilling the mind. She does not say that this describes every yoga tradition. Nor does she equate the Kamasutra’s sexual postures with later yoga asanas: resemblance in bodily form does not make them the same practice.
Why the contrast is not a simple story of opposition
The excerpt does not describe yoga as defeating or replacing kama. Menon notes that strands of the two coexisted. Her argument is about a history in which pleasure and restraint could be distinguished, but also encountered together and understood differently in different traditions.

She traces a changing emphasis from the Rig Veda, where she places kama at the beginning of creation, to later Upanishadic paths of renunciation. In her account, ascetic practices reflect a broader effort to discipline or still bodily desire. These are Menon’s interpretive historical claims in the excerpt, rather than a comprehensive account of every Vedic or Upanishadic view.
Renunciation, meditation, and Patanjali
Menon describes Buddhist renunciation through celibacy, meditation, and bodily deprivation. She distinguishes that account from Patanjali’s yoga: although both involve discipline, Patanjali’s approach is framed as reflexive restraint rather than self-mortification. Against the sensuous pleasure she associates with the Kamasutra, Patanjali’s yoga seeks stillness of mind.

The contrast helps explain her argument, but it should remain narrow. Menon is comparing particular ideals and textual traditions; she is not defining all Buddhist practice, all yoga, or all approaches to desire across India.
How tantra complicates desire and liberation
Tantra unsettles a clean division between desire and liberation. Menon presents tantric traditions as recognizing that desire can bind a person, yet can also become a means of release. In the excerpt’s account, some traditions did not prohibit alcohol, meat, or sex, and treated bodily fluids as possible sources of inner yogic energy.

This is not a claim that all tantric traditions shared one set of practices. Its significance for Menon’s argument is that bodily experience need not be only an obstacle to spiritual aims: it could be incorporated and transformed within particular traditions.
Hatha yoga and the body as a channel
Menon places the development of postural hatha yoga between the 11th and 15th centuries and describes it as emerging from tantra. In her account, the body becomes a system through which sexual fluids can be directed. Desire is acknowledged as a force, but the aim is to master or channel it rather than simply indulge it.

The chronology and historical generalizations here are the excerpt’s framing. They should not be mistaken for a settled, exhaustive timeline of yoga’s development.

Menon also turns to the 10th-century Kashmiri yogi Abhinavagupta, who describes uniting male and female principles—Shiva and Shakti—within oneself. Shiva’s simultaneous associations with erotic power and asceticism make him, in Menon’s reading, an image of the coexistence that runs through her argument: sexuality and renunciation need not be represented as mutually exclusive.

What the excerpt establishes—and what it does not
The excerpt offers a way to read the relationship between kama and yoga through tensions, crossings, and coexistence. It is not a general survey of yoga, tantra, or the Kamasutra, and its historical dates and broad descriptions are presented as Menon’s claims.
