The 1939 film keeps Margaret Mitchell’s central characters and the story’s passage from Tara through the Civil War and Reconstruction, but it compresses a much larger novel into a feature-length drama. The book has more room for narrative detail and context; the film makes its story vivid through performances, Technicolor, music and spectacle. Its adaptation is broadly faithful in aim, not a scene-by-scene reproduction.
What story do the book and film share?
Both versions center on Scarlett O’Hara and the people around her, beginning at the O’Hara plantation, Tara, before the Civil War and continuing through the war and Reconstruction. Her relationships with Ashley Wilkes and Rhett Butler run through that historical upheaval. The Library of Congress catalog describes the film as based on Mitchell’s novel and identifies this setting and historical span; the BFI likewise summarizes the story around Scarlett’s romantic entanglements and the war.
Mitchell’s novel was officially published by Macmillan on 30 June 1936, and producer David O. Selznick acquired the film rights that year, according to the American Film Institute Catalog. The film followed in 1939.
What changes when a novel becomes a film?
The novel has more room to unfold
A novel can spend time on background, transitions and the characters’ thoughts. A feature must select and shape material for a finite running time. The result is not simply a shorter version of every episode: emphasis shifts toward scenes and relationships that can carry the story on screen. The Library of Congress preservation essay describes the film as streamlining and intensifying the novel.

The film tells the story through images and performance
Where prose can explain or dwell on a character’s inner life, the film relies on actors, staging, music, color and visual scale. Molly Haskell’s Library of Congress essay says the movie “didn’t so much obliterate as subsume and streamline the book” and gathered and intensified its themes through Technicolor. That helps explain why the film can feel expansive while still omitting or abbreviating material: visual spectacle and a long runtime do not equal the novel’s narrative breadth.
It is a long film, but still a compression
The British Film Institute lists the 1939 film at 220 minutes. The Library of Congress essay calls it an “almost-four-hour extravaganza.” Those descriptions convey its scale, but neither changes the basic adaptation trade-off: a lengthy feature still has to condense the book.

How faithful is the adaptation?
Selznick’s stated approach was not to “correct” what he considered faults in a successful novel, but to preserve its seeming faults along with its successes. The Harry Ransom Center’s account of the film’s preview materials also notes that controversy and production issues led to omissions and abbreviations. So fidelity was an aim, not a guarantee that every part of the book would appear onscreen.
Responses at the first preview, held on 9 September 1939 at the Fox Riverside Theater, show that viewers noticed different things. Jean Hall praised the film for following the story closely. Some respondents who had not read the book found the O’Hara introduction confusing, while others wanted more battle scenes or fuller treatment of the war. These are reactions from that preview audience, not a poll of all contemporary viewers.

The institutional accounts establish broad compression and omission, not a definitive, exhaustive list of every plot difference. A scene-by-scene comparison requires checking the novel against the film directly; it is safer to describe the overall adaptation than to claim that a particular incident is the only or most important change.
What historical perspective should viewers and readers keep in mind?
Neither work should be treated as a neutral account of slavery, the Civil War or Reconstruction. The story’s nostalgic Old South framing and racial representation reflect a romanticized perspective. The Library of Congress essay calls the film politically incorrect and racially retrograde; the BFI also notes that its racial politics have dated.

The film’s reception makes that history especially visible: Hattie McDaniel won the first Oscar awarded to a Black actor, yet she was barred from the Atlanta premiere, as the BFI records. Her exclusion is part of the film’s history, not a footnote that can be separated from its portrayal of race.

- Experience both if you want to see how a screen adaptation reshapes a popular book—and to consider how each version frames its history.
For reference, the BFI lists Victor Fleming as director, David O. Selznick as producer and Sidney Howard among the writers. The AFI Catalog documents a more complicated production history involving multiple writers and directors, so those screen credits should not be mistaken for the full account of who shaped the production.
