The speech most closely tied to Kaitlyn Dever’s comments about delivering an explosive moment in The Last of Us is Abby’s finale confrontation with Ellie: “I let you live. And you wasted it!” In a May 25, 2025 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Dever said the confrontation was the last scene she filmed and explained how she returned to Abby’s anger to perform it. The specific “exclusive” named in the headline could not be independently confirmed; this account draws on related, published interviews instead.
Which speech is Dever talking about?
The best-supported identification is Abby’s line to Ellie in the season-two finale: “I let you live. And you wasted it!” The Los Angeles Times records the line and asks Dever about delivering “You wasted it.” The available reporting does not establish that this was the speech in the exact exclusive named in the supplied title, so it is more accurate to call it the likely speech than to claim a confirmed match.
Dever plays Abby Anderson, whose pursuit of Joel is rooted in his killing of her father, a surgeon at the Fireflies hospital, while rescuing Ellie. The adaptation introduces Abby earlier and gives viewers more access to her motives. As co-creator Craig Mazin told TheWrap, “You are introduced to Abby in the game by playing as Abby. So you are occupying her space. You are connected with her. That’s not how television works. So we do meet her in a different way.”
That context matters to the finale line: Abby’s fury is not detached from grief or the history between the characters. It lands after the show has made her connection to Joel’s actions more legible to viewers.

How Dever prepared to return to Abby’s anger
Dever told the Los Angeles Times that the finale confrontation was the last scene she filmed. She had been traveling between Vancouver and Los Angeles, and said she needed to find Abby’s emotional intensity again: “I was going back and forth between Vancouver and L.A., so I constantly had to recalibrate and get back into the emotional intensity of Abby.”
To do that, she recalled the first scene she shot—the killing of Joel—and Abby’s monologue. Those earlier scenes helped her reconnect with the anger she needed for the final confrontation. This is Dever’s account of her own preparation, not a claim that the performance depended on a particular technique or rehearsal process beyond what she described.

Abby’s grief and the different moments in her story
Dever has described Abby as carrying grief alongside anger. In an interview with GameSpot, she said: “She’s heartbroken, she’s sad, she’s lost and she’s trying to pick up the pieces.” That remark concerns Abby’s emotional state in the premiere; it should not be mistaken for a description of the finale speech itself. Together, the comments suggest a character whose rage is shaped by loss, while keeping the premiere and finale scenes distinct.

Before playing Abby on television, Dever had a personal history with The Last of Us. In a Sky Atlantic Q&A ahead of season two, she said she and her father used to play the game together. She also recalled meeting co-creator Neil Druckmann years earlier, when a film adaptation was being discussed, and talking about the possibility of playing Ellie.
