What is Kaalidhar Laapata about?
Kaalidhar, a middle-aged man experiencing memory loss, overhears his brothers planning to abandon him at the Maha Kumbh Mela. He leaves before they can carry out the plan and meets Ballu, an eight-year-old orphan. Their relationship becomes the film’s emotional center: two people pushed aside by others begin to find companionship and care in one another.
The premise sets up a story about rejection, loneliness and second chances, with the bond between Kaalidhar and Ballu offering its strongest source of feeling.

Does the friendship work?
Broadly, yes. Reviews identify the central relationship as the film’s most affecting element, and the tenderness between the two characters gives the drama its purpose. Scroll critic Nandini Ramnath described the connection between “two cast-aside souls” as the reason the Hindi adaptation works too. Daivik Baghela’s performance as Ballu drew particular praise, including from The Indian Express.
The film does not always give that connection enough room to develop. India Today praises the friendship and performances but notes that some scenes do not fully build the emotional bond. That limitation matters: the relationship is the story’s main draw, so its most moving moments can feel less earned when the narrative rushes or stalls around them.

How is Abhishek Bachchan’s performance?
Critical reactions to Bachchan’s portrayal differ. The Times of India praises his restrained, vulnerable work, while Scroll calls the performance affecting. The Indian Express is less convinced, arguing that he struggles to match his young co-star. The reviews therefore support a qualified verdict rather than a single consensus: his performance works for some critics, but others find the contrast with Baghela more apparent.

Uneven pacing
Several reviews find the film sluggish or uneven. The quieter material and the friendship are central to its appeal, but the storytelling does not always sustain momentum or deepen the bond at the right moments.

An inconsistent memory-loss storyline
Critics also question how consistently the film handles Kaalidhar’s illness. Scroll and The Times of India both point to problems with the memory-loss track. That makes it harder for the condition to feel like a fully integrated part of his character and the story’s emotional stakes.
Is Kaalidhar Laapata a remake?
Yes. Director Madhumita adapted her 2019 Tamil film K.D. into Hindi. The Hindi version reduces the age gap between its central characters and changes the protagonist’s age and circumstances, while retaining the themes of rejection, abandonment and second chances. Madhumita directed both films.

Choose Kaalidhar Laapata if you are drawn to gentle social dramas about unlikely companionship and can accept a story whose execution is less consistent than its emotional premise. The connection between Kaalidhar and Ballu is the strongest reason to watch; the uneven pacing and treatment of memory loss are the main reasons to temper expectations. For viewers who know K.D., the Hindi adaptation offers a changed setup from the same director rather than a scene-for-scene repeat.
