In her selection of three poems, translator Roopa Pai highlights a young poet’s faith in words, a comic encounter with tradition, and a meditation on death. Her English versions offer a route into Ahmed’s work, while remaining translations of poems written in Kannada.
Who was K. S. Nisar Ahmed?
K. S. Nisar Ahmed (1936–2020) was a Kannada poet and writer. The University of Chicago Press author page describes a career that included poetry, translations and children’s books, and identifies “Nityotsava” as his best-known poem.
Ahmed’s writing ranged across politics, philosophy, nature, romance, injustice, outsiderhood, cultural conflict and daily life, according to Pai. He also often mixed Urdu into Kannada. The three poems she chose do not reduce that breadth to one message: together they show distinct ways of looking at injustice, social convention and human impermanence.
Why these three poems?
Pai’s selection moves from a declaration about poetry’s power to a humorous, autobiographical view of tradition, then to a reflection on death. The English wording discussed here is Pai’s translation, not Ahmed’s original Kannada. Her account of translating “Nityotsava” points to a broader difficulty in carrying poetry across languages: she writes, “No translation will ever be able to adequately capture the mood and rhythm of that particular poem, or recreate the thrill that hearing the first bars of the music which it has been set to sends through every Kannadiga soul.” That observation names “Nityotsava” specifically, but it also helps explain why the texture of a translated poem cannot be treated as identical to the original.

“My Words”: a young poet’s confidence in verse
Pai identifies “My Words,” or “Nanna Nudi,” as the opening poem in Ahmed’s first poetry collection, published when he was 24. The collection is Manasu Gandhi Bazaaru (The Mind Is Gandhi Bazaar), dated 1960 in Pai’s article.
She reads the poem as a declaration of faith in what poetry can do: cut through injustice and apathy. Its place at the start of Ahmed’s first collection gives that confidence a particular force. This is not simply a poem about writing; in Pai’s interpretation, it presents the poetic voice as a response to a world that can ignore what is wrong.

“Amma, Tradition and I”: humor as social observation
Pai calls “Amma, Tradition and I” well-known, funny and autobiographical. She chose it to introduce Ahmed’s large-hearted liberal outlook. Here, the focus is not the direct assertion of “My Words,” but the way family and tradition become material for humor and observation.
Pai’s article does not identify this poem’s collection or publication year. Its place in her selection is clear without those details: comedy offers a way to examine inherited social expectations while keeping the poem grounded in personal experience.

“The News of (Sir CV) Raman’s Death”: mortality and perspective
In Pai’s reading, “The News of (Sir CV) Raman’s Death,” also titled “Raman Satta Suddi,” meditates on life’s fragility and the conceits that enslave people. She notes that the closing verses felt apt to the moment when she wrote about the poem. The poem appears in Naanemba Parakeeya (The Alien That Is Me), dated 1972 in her article.
Where “My Words” looks outward toward injustice and “Amma, Tradition and I” finds humor in social life, this poem turns attention to mortality. Its perspective asks what remains of everyday attachments and self-importance when life is understood as finite.
