Justin Baldoni’s countersuit accused Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and people working with Lively of defamation and extortion, and alleged that Lively sought control of It Ends With Us. Those were allegations in Baldoni’s legal case, not findings that a court established as true. Lively, in turn, accused Baldoni of inappropriate conduct during filming and of helping undermine her reputation. The parties settled the bulk of the dispute in May 2026, so a jury did not resolve the core competing accounts.
What did Baldoni claim in his countersuit?
Baldoni and other plaintiffs accused Lively, Reynolds and Lively’s public-relations representatives of defamation and extortion. Their complaint portrayed Lively’s accusations and related media activity as part of an effort to damage Baldoni’s reputation and gain control over the film. Baldoni’s side also disputed descriptions of him as a sexual predator, arguing that they were false. These were claims advanced by the plaintiffs in their complaint, not independent proof of what happened.
ABC reported that Baldoni’s countersuit sought $400 million in damages. That was the amount demanded in the complaint; it was not an award or a court finding. ABC News’ timeline summarizes the litigation, while Baldoni’s complaint sets out his side’s allegations.
What did Lively allege, and how did Baldoni respond?
Lively alleged that Baldoni made inappropriate comments and crossed boundaries during filming, pressured her over nudity in a birth scene, and that a campaign followed to undermine her reputation and credibility. Baldoni denied harassing her or orchestrating a smear campaign. He said her complaints were fabricated as part of an effort to take creative control of the film. These are the parties’ competing accounts as summarized by the Associated Press; they should not be read as findings by a judge or jury.

The disagreement is not merely about what happened on set: the parties also offered sharply different explanations for the dispute and its publicity. The allegations each side made are not proof of the other side’s motive.
What happened to the lawsuit?
The parties settled the bulk of the dispute in May 2026, avoiding a trial on the remaining claims. The settlement’s financial terms were not publicly announced. At a post-settlement hearing, Baldoni’s lawyer told the court the settlement did not include payment of the $300 million in damages Lively had been demanding, according to the Associated Press.

On June 12, 2026, Judge Lewis J. Liman allowed Lively to recover some legal fees and costs tied to defending against Baldoni’s countersuit, but rejected her requests for punitive damages and other additional relief. That fee ruling did not determine the truth of the underlying disputed allegations at a jury trial. The Associated Press’ report on the ruling describes the outcome.

The dispute arose around the production and publicity of the 2024 film It Ends With Us, released in August 2024 and adapted from Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel. The book is the source material behind the film; that connection is separate from the parties’ contested allegations. The Associated Press noted the novel’s role in its coverage of the outcome.
