Jurassic World Rebirth arrived with a familiar promise: put people in front of enormous prehistoric predators and let the survival story unfold. The first reviews suggested that director Gareth Edwards largely delivers on the spectacle, especially in the film’s water-based attacks, creature effects, and large-scale suspense. Several set pieces stood out in the early reactions:
- A T. rex and raft sequence: The scene uses confined space and unstable water to make the animal feel dangerous without relying only on rapid cuts.
- Open-water attacks: The ocean becomes an extension of the dinosaur threat, leaving characters with limited escape routes and little control over their surroundings.
- Disaster-movie structure: The mission’s escalating failures give the film a clear rhythm, moving from expedition planning to pursuit, separation, and survival.
The visual effects were another frequent strength. The dinosaurs were often described as convincing and physically present, with polished digital work supporting the film’s emphasis on movement, weather, terrain, and danger. That praise was not universal, however. Some critics argued that the effects could only do so much when the human characters lacked comparable depth.
A familiar expedition with a new cast
The premise sends a team into isolated equatorial environments where most of the world’s remaining dinosaurs survive. Their objective is to obtain DNA from three enormous animals: one land-based, one aquatic, and one airborne. The samples could be used in the development of a potentially life-saving drug.
Scarlett Johansson leads the cast, with Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey among the principal players. Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Audrina Miranda also appear. David Koepp wrote the screenplay, with Michael Crichton credited for the underlying characters and source material.

The setup gives the movie a useful documentary-like structure, even though it is a fictional action film. Each target represents a different environment and a different kind of risk. On land, the team faces pursuit and sudden attacks. At sea, visibility and movement become problems. In the air, the threat is difficult to track and even harder to contain.
That variety helps prevent the film from becoming a series of identical jungle chases. It also gives Edwards room to stage the animals as creatures with distinct physical advantages rather than interchangeable monsters.
Where the reviews turned negative
The main criticism was not the lack of action. It was the material connecting the action scenes.
Reviewers repeatedly cited generic dialogue, shallow characterization, plot holes, and a screenplay that relies too heavily on familiar franchise patterns. The mission, the team dynamics, the corporate interests, and the repeated discoveries of supposedly safe locations all reminded critics of earlier installments. The film’s new cast and location provide some surface freshness, but the underlying structure can feel recycled.

David Ehrlich of IndieWire made a related argument: the human characters are too thin to give the dinosaurs’ danger maximum emotional force. If the audience does not know much about the people being chased, an expertly rendered creature may still register primarily as an effects achievement rather than a source of sustained fear.
This is the central divide in the early response. Viewers looking for momentum, creature encounters, and old-fashioned adventure may find the film satisfying. Viewers expecting the character tension and scientific unease associated with the best entries in the series may find the script underdeveloped.

Jurassic World Rebirth is best understood as a new chapter with a new group of leads, not as a clean reboot. The plot is designed to work without requiring a detailed recap of every earlier film, but its position in the same continuity matters. It follows Dominion by five years and continues the broader idea that dinosaurs have become part of an unstable modern world.
The difference is one of emphasis. Earlier Jurassic World films expanded the number of dinosaurs, facilities, and global consequences. Rebirth narrows the immediate story around an expedition and a biological objective. That gives it a more focused survival-film shape, closer to a dangerous field mission than a full-scale dinosaur society drama.

The early critical response was mixed rather than overwhelmingly positive, and later aggregate figures reflect that split. Expectations matter. This is not a widely acclaimed return to the dramatic ambition of the original Jurassic Park. The reviews point instead to a functional adventure that is often exciting in motion and noticeably weaker when its characters stop running. The film’s old-school appeal is real, but so are its familiar story beats.
