Bowen told PEOPLE, in an interview republished by AOL, that she was on vacation with her family, had little connectivity and was trying to read the script on her phone when she reached the reveal.

She also joked about the story’s effect on Happy: “I don’t care. It’s great. Happy can’t be happy.” Bowen said she was glad to be part of the film whether her role was large or small.

What happens to Virginia in the sequel
Bowen returns as Virginia Venit, her character from the 1996 original. In the sequel, Virginia and Happy have a family, but she is killed early after being struck by a golf ball Happy hits. Her death and Happy’s memories of her help drive the story.
Bowen was pleased that the film kept Happy and Virginia together as a couple. Her reaction was not a complaint about the role: she described being in the movie as fun, regardless of its size.

Why the filmmakers made the death central
Director Kyle Newacheck described Virginia’s death as the film’s driving force in Variety’s reporting. He said the filmmakers considered the risk of using such dark material, but argued that removing it would leave the story without anything real. That is Newacheck’s explanation of the choice, distinct from Bowen’s amused response to reading it.
