Julia Morris has described weeks of exhaustion and pain after shingles disrupted a busy period in her career. Her account was published by GSK Australia as part of a company-sponsored awareness campaign, so it is a personal story relayed by the campaign—not independent verification of her medical history. Shingles can be more than a short-lived rash: official guidance warns of lasting nerve pain and, in some cases, serious eye complications.
What Julia Morris said about her shingles experience
In a GSK Australia press release dated 14 October 2025, the Australian comedian and television host said she was sharing her experience publicly for the first time as an ambassador for the company-sponsored campaign. The release quoted her describing a red rash across her torso, an aching body, a severe headache and exhaustion during one of the busiest periods of her career. She said the illness left her debilitated for weeks.
“When shingles hit me, I was in the middle of one of the busiest times of my career. The physical toll was immediate and overwhelming — I had a red rash across my torso, an aching body and the most brutal headache,” Morris said in the release.
That description is Morris’s account as presented by GSK; it should not be taken as a typical symptom list or as independent confirmation of her medical history.

No. Shingles is caused by reactivation of varicella-zoster virus, the virus that causes chickenpox. After chickenpox, the virus remains in the body and can reactivate later as shingles; a person does not catch shingles itself from someone else. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about one in three people in the United States will develop shingles in their lifetime, and about one million people in the country get it each year. These are US estimates, not figures for Australia or every country. CDC: About Shingles
A painful, itchy or tingling rash, usually on one side of the body, is common. Pain, itching or tingling can begin several days before the rash appears. The rash typically forms blisters that scab over in seven to 10 days and clear within two to four weeks, according to the CDC. CDC: Shingles Symptoms and Complications

Why the effects can last longer than the rash
The most common complication is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN): nerve pain that continues after the rash has cleared and may last for months or years. The CDC estimates that about 10%–18% of people with shingles experience PHN; the risk rises with age. If shingles affects the face, it can involve the eye and cause vision loss. CDC: Shingles Symptoms and Complications
In the same GSK campaign release, Monika Boogs, chief executive of Painaustralia, said shingles can disrupt sleep, mood, work and daily activities, and may affect quality of life. She also noted the possibility of chronic nerve pain. Her comments describe potential impacts, not outcomes that every person with shingles will experience.

“Too often, shingles is thought of as ‘just a rash’, when in reality, it can be painful and debilitating. Beyond the visible symptoms, it can disrupt sleep, mood, work and daily activities and potentially affect quality of life. For some people, it can also lead to long-term issues including chronic nerve pain,” Boogs said in the release.
When should you seek treatment for shingles?
Contact a healthcare professional promptly if you think you may have shingles. Antiviral medicines—including acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir—can shorten the illness and reduce its severity, and the CDC says they work best when started as soon as the rash appears. The NHS says antiviral treatment, when offered, is usually started within three days of the rash beginning. Treatment decisions depend on individual circumstances, so seek local medical advice rather than self-prescribing or waiting for the rash to pass. CDC: About Shingles · NHS: Shingles

Get urgent advice for warning signs
NHS guidance in the UK advises urgent medical help for a shingles rash on the eye or nose, vision changes, pregnancy, or a severely weakened immune system. These are UK NHS recommendations; local services and advice may differ elsewhere. If symptoms are severe or you are unsure how urgent they are, contact a local clinician or urgent-care service. Comfort measures are not antiviral treatment
The CDC lists wet compresses, warm oatmeal baths and calamine lotion as options that may help relieve itching. They do not treat the virus or replace prompt medical assessment when shingles is suspected. CDC: About Shingles

Can shingles be prevented?
Vaccination recommendations vary by country; the US CDC’s recommendations and NHS eligibility in England are not interchangeable, and neither establishes eligibility rules for Australia.
| Jurisdiction and source | Who is covered by the stated guidance | Schedule or program detail |
|---|---|---|
| United States — CDC | Adults aged 50 and older, and adults aged 19 and older who are immunocompromised because of disease or therapy | Two doses of recombinant zoster vaccine (Shingrix). CDC: About Shingles |
| England — NHS | People turning 65 on or after 1 September 2023; unvaccinated people aged 70–79; and people aged 18 or older with a severely weakened immune system | NHS eligibility for the shingles vaccination programme in England. NHS: Shingles |
For Australian eligibility, check current advice with a local health professional or the relevant Australian health authority rather than applying US or England criteria.

What the campaign survey does—and does not—show
GSK’s 14 October 2025 release also reported results from a GSK-commissioned online YouGov survey of 1,551 Australian adults aged 50–69, conducted 12–18 August 2025. GSK said 80% recognized shingles can cause a painful rash, 79% recognized longer-term nerve pain, and 43% worried it could disrupt life. The release also reported that 24% did not believe speaking to a doctor about shingles was their responsibility and 33% did not know shingles is caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus. The release cites “YouGov Shingles Consumer Survey August 2025. GSK Data on File”; the underlying report was not independently available here, so these should be understood as figures reported by the campaign sponsor, not independently assessed findings.
